Nacka: Nature, History and Culture

From central Stockholm, the area can be reached in 15–20 minutes by bus from Slussen or by commuter ferry from central Stockholm. Once there, you can choose between trails through nature reserves, museums, historic sites and exhibitions.

Industrial history at Nacka ström

A cultural and historical walk along Nacka ström covers witch trials, the industrial society and mill operations. The route is approximately 2.1 kilometres long and takes 1.5 hours. Those interested in the industrial past can also find remains at Nacka ström and Källtorpssjön dating back to the 16th century.

At the Nacka local history museum, Nacka’s earliest history is presented through objects used by farmers and crofters in the 19th century. Other topics include shoemaking and textile production for personal use. The museum can be reached from Slussen by buses 71, 404 or 443 towards Jarlaberg. From the Jarlaberg stop, continue on foot to Nyckelviken.

Nyckelviken and Historical Sites

The Nyckelviken nature reserve features extensive stands of old oak trees and meadows between densely vegetated groups of trees. Cows, horses, chickens, rabbits, sheep and pigs live on the Nyckelviken farm; visitors can see the animals during the day. Svindersvik offers another historical perspective: the estate is one of the oldest surviving summer houses and a well-preserved part of 18th-century Nacka. Brygghuset has a café serving baked goods and lunch options.

Trails, Lakes and Views

Hellasgården is located in the large Nackareservatet recreational area, directly on Stockholm’s southeastern border with Nacka. The area has hiking trails, illuminated paths and an outdoor gym. There are also outdoor swimming opportunities at Källtorpssjön and Söderbysjön. From the summit of Himlaberget, which is just over 70 metres high, the view extends across Baggensfjärden and the islands beyond.

Other nature reserves also have different features. At the lower end of Rudsjön in the Velamsund nature reserve, on the eastern side of the lake, there is a birdwatching tower and an accessible viewing platform. The Tollare nature reserve has many trails, as well as an illuminated path for walking or running.

Military History and Historical Walks

Tollare’s history includes the Tollare fortification on Hjortberget. It formed part of the outer ring of Stockholm’s air defence, was built during the Second World War and is considered the best-preserved facility of its kind in the Stockholm metropolitan area.

A historical walk in Boo leads through the Skogsö nature reserve. One of the stops is the Skogsö Monument, which commemorates the Battle of Stäket in 1719. In this battle, Swedish troops defeated a Russian galley fleet. In the Erstavik area, the green, blue and new white trails are maintained by Nacka Municipality. There are also marked trails and small roads suitable for walking or cycling.

Art and Culture in Nacka

For a stay focused on culture, Nacka konsthall offers around six exhibitions a year, all with free admission. Kulturhuset Dieselverkstaden complements this with performing arts, music, visual arts and creative activities. Nacka’s offerings therefore range from traces of mill operations and agriculture to contemporary exhibitions and cultural events.
