Ljusterö: Nature Reserve, Archipelago and Culture

Ljusterö combines nature experiences, archipelago and culture. The maritime character is particularly evident in the Själbottna-Östra Lagnö Nature Reserve: hiking trails lead through the natural landscape, while Östra Lagnö points towards the Åland Sea as Ljusterö’s outermost outpost. Many bird species breed in the reserve. East of Skakroksudden, you can find, among others, turnstones, oystercatchers and gulls.

Nature Reserve, Rocks and Birdlife

In the Själbottna-Östra Lagnö Nature Reserve, there is also a fishing jetty and wheelchair-accessible toilets in addition to the trails. At the sea-facing tip of Brännholmen, you can swim from the rocks smoothed by the inland ice. This means that the focus there is not only on observing the landscape, but also on providing direct access to the water. The combination of hiking trails, shoreline and birdlife makes the reserve a distinct focal point for a stay on Ljusterö.

Hiking Trails with Different Levels of Difficulty

Pilgrimsleden Ljusterö is 2.6 kilometres long, hilly and challenging. You need at least about an hour to complete the route. There are six stations along the trail. One notable historical marker is a heritage-protected stone monument with boundary stones. It marks the boundaries between the properties of Sundvik, Östanå Gods and the municipality of Ljusterö kulla and is connected with the land reorganisation of 1853. Pilgrimsleden thus combines a short, clearly described hiking route with visible traces of local property history.

An alternative route is offered by Natur- och Sagostigen, which begins at Granliden. Its nature trail has variants measuring 4 and 6 kilometres. You can therefore use the trail length as a criterion in planning your day without equating the historical stations of Pilgrimsleden with the nature trail.

Archipelago, Swimming and Kayaking

From the Ljusterö Huvud viewpoint, the view reaches three miles out into the archipelago in clear weather. For a day of swimming, there is also the public Lilla badberget bathing area in Linanäs, which is managed by the municipality. Kayaks are rented at several locations around Ljusterö. This means that, alongside walks and viewpoints, swimming and paddling are available as different ways to experience the water.

Church, Museum and Art

The white-painted, octagonal wooden Ljusterö kyrka church is located near Mellansjö, by Kyrksjön, in the centre of Ljusterö. The chapel from which today’s church developed was completely rebuilt towards the end of the 19th century. Those wishing to explore the cultural and historical side of the area in greater depth can visit Ljusterö hembygdsmuseum, which houses an 18th-century dwelling originally built in Vadholma. Traditional costumes, engagement gifts, photographs and household objects are displayed there.

Ljusterö Konsthall complements this insight with Swedish and international art, handicrafts and photography connected to the archipelago. The cultural offering therefore extends from a historic church building and everyday history to contemporary art and maritime imagery.
