Österhaninge brings together several cultural and historical themes: Österhaninge kyrka with its burial chapel and cemetery, the history of the Bremer family at Årsta slottsmuseum, and the Fredrikaslingan cultural trail. When planning your trip, you can first consider which focus interests you most: church art and biographical connections, or a walk centred on Fredrika Bremer. The agricultural landscape around the church also shapes the character of this place.

Church Art, Biography, and Landscape

The Bielkenstiernska burial chapel at Österhaninge kyrka dates from the 1660s. In 1683, a large group of sculptures was installed there in honour of the Bielkenstierna family. These two dates offer a concrete way to explore the history of the burial chapel and its art. Fredrika Bremer (1801–1865), a writer and advocate for peace and women’s rights, is buried in the church cemetery. There are also several rune stones from the late 11th century around Österhaninge, often featuring cross motifs. The area around the church is a gently rolling agricultural landscape, with open fields and wooded heights. A visit thus brings together historical landmarks and a clearly defined landscape character.

Fredrika Bremer at the Museum and on the Cultural Trail

The museum floor in the castle is part of Årsta slottsmuseum. It tells the story of the Bremer family’s life at Årsta. The focus is therefore on family life at Årsta; at the church, the burial place serves as a reminder of Fredrika Bremer herself. In 2026, Haninge Municipality is not offering open public tours at Årsta slottsmuseum, although bookable tours may occasionally be available. If a tour is important to your plans, check in advance whether you can book a time.

Fredrikaslingan is a signposted cultural trail near Årsta slott. On a walk, visitors can learn more about Fredrika Bremer’s life at Årsta and circle her beloved home. The trail is adapted for travel on wheels. This sets the trail apart from the museum: here, you encounter the biographical story while on the move. You can also have a picnic in Årsta’s English Park.

Getting There and Nearby Prehistory

Nearby, Jordbrogravfält adds a prehistoric dimension to the area’s cultural and historical themes. Three large information boards along a walking path in the eastern part describe life in the Haninge region throughout prehistory. Thirteen smaller boards focus on the Early Iron Age, when Jordbrogravfält became a large burial and ritual site. The burial ground borders Gullringskärret Nature Reserve, where there are numerous marshes and ferns around Husbyån. East of Jordbrogravfält and north of the nature reserve, there is also a signposted Stone Age settlement site. This lets you distinguish the area’s connections to different periods of history, rather than treating church art, family history, and prehistory as a single theme.
