Bro: Nature and History
Accommodation in Bro
Bro offers two clear travel interests: nature on Lake Mälaren and cultural history at Bro Church. The Broängarna Nature Reserve and its trails give the first theme its shape; building history, vaulted ceilings, and historical sites define the second. If you are planning a stay in Bro, you can weigh up what interests you most about the area based on these differences.

Nature and trails
Broängarna is a wetland on Lake Mälaren where 230 bird species have been recorded. Its lakeside location and recorded birdlife offer two distinct points of reference for nature lovers. For travelers who prioritize nature when choosing a vacation destination, Broängarna is a concrete option to consider.
Two trail descriptions provide a concrete measure for planning: the 29-kilometer Upplands-Broleden runs through Broängarna, while the three-kilometer Culture and Nature Trail runs from the reserve parking lot to Hästholmen. They differ considerably in length, and the shorter trail has a specified starting point and destination. If distance is part of your travel decision, you can compare the two trails by length. The three-kilometer trail is about one-tenth the length of the Upplands-Broleden.
Brovikarna is also a Natura 2000 site. This designation complements Broängarna’s wetlands and birdlife as you plan nature-focused activities.
Church and historic sites
Bro Church is one of the oldest stone churches in Upplands-Bro and was built in the 12th century. Its interior features medieval vaulted ceilings. The construction date and the vaults draw attention to two different aspects: the date places the church in its historical period, while the vaults describe an architectural feature of the interior. Vaults are arched ceiling structures, making the term a way to understand a specific feature of the church’s interior.
From Bro Church, there are expansive views of the natural surroundings; in the distance, you can see the waters of Lake Mälaren. The view adds a landscape perspective to the architecture. If you want to take in both the culture and the surroundings, you can see them together from here.
North of Bro Church stands a runestone that Ginnlög had erected in memory of her husband, Assur, who was the son of Jarl Håkon. The dedication gives the stone a personal historical context. Unlike the church architecture, which centers on its construction date and vaults, the focus here is on remembering Assur and his connection to Ginnlög.
A burial ground with two large burial mounds is located in Husby i Bro. This historic site offers a different emphasis from the church: the focus is on a burial ground, not a stone church with medieval vaulted ceilings. Along with the runestone, this gives you three distinct cultural and historical points of interest: church architecture, a personal memorial dedication, and a burial site.
