Discover Boxholm: Industrial History and Östgötaleden
Accommodation in Boxholm
If you’d like to combine cultural history with active days, Boxholm offers several specific points of interest. Bruksmuseum, the swimming pool and the stages of Östgötaleden offer different experiences. The town has places to eat and drink, shops and accommodation; hikes on Östgötaleden can start at the railway station.
Industrial history and amenities in town
Boxholms Bruksmuseum is housed in Boxholm’s oldest building, a former mill building dating from 1777. It presents the local industrial history through numerous objects from the mill’s years of operation, films and guided tours. The different formats offer different ways to explore the town’s history: from objects dating from the mill’s years of operation to accounts presented through film or guided tours.
Another historical connection can be seen at the church in Boxholm: it was built from slag stone from the ironworks and inaugurated in 1897. While the museum is housed in a former mill building, the church draws attention to the ironworks’ building material. There are 120 years between the mill building’s construction in 1777 and the church’s inauguration in 1897.
Boxholm swimming pool has a 25-metre pool with several lanes, as well as a sauna and a relaxation area. Swimming and taking a break are two different options that you can enjoy at this venue.
Folkets Hus in Boxholm has a digital 3D cinema. As the programme and availability may change, it’s best to check the schedule before your visit.
Hiking: stages and route information
The Boxholm–Blåvik stage follows forest trails, gravel forest roads and short stretches of asphalt. One kilometre south of the town centre, it passes Timmeröbadet. From there, you can follow Östgötaleden along Gamla Timmerövägen and Anderstorpsvägen to the bridge over Lillån.
The Boxholm–Trehörna stage is hilly and connects forest and cultural landscapes. Along this stage, you’ll reach Göstrings urskog. The terrain and landscape here therefore offer different points to consider when choosing a route than the surface types on the stage to Blåvik.
Along the Boxholm–Strålsnäs stage, there is a shelter with a fire pit in the forest near Strömmen. Boxholm ski stadium can be reached via a detour of about 300 metres; there you’ll find a rest area and barbecue site.
Hikes on Östgötaleden can start at Boxholm railway station. Together with the places to eat and drink and the shops in town, this is a useful point of reference when planning hikes and a stay in Boxholm.
More leisure activities and nature spots
Flemminge golf course is on the Svartån river, on the edge of Boxholm. Outside Boxholm, Lagnebrunnaeken is protected as a natural monument. These two destinations add further points of interest to the activities described in town and the varied landscapes and routes along Östgötaleden.
