Arlanda: Airport, Art and Accommodation
Accommodation in Arlanda
For many travellers, Arlanda is primarily the airport serving the Stockholm region. A stay here may be shaped by a flight schedule, a layover or a visit to the airport facilities. So if you are looking for a hotel, holiday home or holiday rental, first compare its actual location in relation to the terminal, railway station and the routes you plan to take. SkyCity connects Terminals 4 and 5 and includes hotels, restaurants, shops and a railway station. This describes a specific area of the airport, not the availability of rooms or services at any accommodation with “Arlanda” in its name.

Finding your way between terminals and transport routes
Train, bus, taxi and rental car are available for getting to and from the airport. Which option suits your flight and accommodation depends on the terminal, travel date and exact address. Especially for an early departure, the claim “near the airport” is less useful than a verifiable route to the correct terminal. When comparing offers, do not infer an unverified transfer time from the place name.
At the heart of the airport is Marknadsplatsen, covering around 11,000 square metres and home to about 40 shops, cafés and restaurants. According to the official description, the selection has a distinctly Nordic character. This area can make a wait more enjoyable than simply walking through to the gate; check the current opening hours of individual shops and whether they are accessible along your route. It is not the same as the railway station or a hotel in SkyCity.
A new airport city with hotels, conference facilities, shops, restaurants and creative workspaces is being developed next to the terminals. This is an ongoing project. Elements that are not yet complete must not be presented as accommodation available to book today or as services already in operation. For your current stay, what matters is the accommodation actually listed and its precise location.
Art and technology at the airport
Open Sky is a permanent installation in the departure hall of Terminal 5. Using projection mapping, it displays air traffic to and from Stockholm Arlanda in three dimensions on a two-metre globe. For anyone interested in aviation, it is a clearly located point of interest in the terminal. The installation shows air traffic; it does not confirm any specific flight. Official flight information remains the authoritative source.
The portrait gallery “Welcome to my hometown” features prominent figures from sport, music, fashion, design, art, culture, business and innovation. The portraits are located beyond security in the arrivals halls of Terminals 2 and 5. This information about location and access is important: the gallery is not a general city exhibition that anyone can freely visit. For children, Flajt playfully explains baggage handling, the air traffic control tower and security screening. These topics do not, however, entitle visitors to enter operational areas.
Outside the terminal, there is a viewpoint on a hill by Lake Halmsjön. From there, visitors can watch planes take off and land at close range. Plan it as a separate destination with a specific route there, not as a view from every airport hotel. Weather, flight operations and individual viewing experiences may vary.
The surrounding area also has history and nature
The cultural landscape around Arlanda includes buildings dating from the 18th century, runestones and Iron Age burial grounds. A specific inscription, U Fv1992;157, commemorates Þorsteinn, brother of the sponsors Gunnarr, Bjǫrn and Þorgrímr, who died in the east with Ingvarr. This historical trace is a different point of interest from the terminal art; the inscription’s name does not, however, imply a walking route from SkyCity or free access to every archaeological site.
Lejden has been a protected nature area since 2009; its meadows have been grazed since the Iron Age. Many plant and animal species also occur within the airport grounds, some of which are rare even by European standards. The ecological value of the area is not an invitation to enter operational or protected areas. If you want to experience nature, choose a destination that is actually accessible and take an appropriate route.
Choosing accommodation to suit your trip
For a flight, the connection to the correct terminal is crucial; for the art, viewpoint or destinations in the Sigtuna area, a different starting point may make more sense. The wider destination of Sigtuna includes Arlanda, Märsta, Rosersberg and the town of Sigtuna; this does not mean that all these places are close to one another. The overview of Stockholm Arlanda helps put the airport area into context. Before booking, compare the address, amenities, price and availability of the specific accommodation.
