Discover Stora Sundby
Accommodation in Stora Sundby
Stora Sundby is a unique castle landscape dating from the 1840s, with medieval origins; the park and views across Lake Hjälmaren shape the scene. The present appearance of Stora Sundby Castle took shape in 1848. The old castle ruin in the park is first mentioned in the 14th century. These dates refer to different aspects: medieval origins, the first mention of the ruin, and the castle’s 19th-century appearance. The ruin and the castle as it looks today therefore represent different historical layers. Lake Hjälmaren connects castle views, picnics by the shore, and cycling and hiking routes as different ways to include the lake in your travel plans.
Castle history and traces of the past
Västermo Church in Stora Sundby is also a historical landmark. It is Romanesque in style and dates back to the 12th century. Its origins therefore predate the first mention of the castle ruin, while the castle’s present appearance dates from the 19th century. In the grounds of Stora Sundby Castle, the Sö 88 runestone stands on a hill. The church, ruin, castle and runestone offer different historical points of reference: through their architectural style, dates and the stone’s location.
Park, wildlife and Lake Hjälmaren
The grounds of Stora Sundby Castle include a rose garden. The wildlife enclosure at Stora Sundby is home to fallow deer and mouflon sheep. The gardens and wildlife offer a different focus from the historical traces. When planning your trip, you can choose what to focus on: the building’s history, the rose garden or the wildlife enclosure.
The café at Stora Sundby Castle is located in a former orangery on the estate and offers views of Lake Hjälmaren and the castle. The café is open seasonally, and its opening schedule may change; check whether it is open before visiting. At the castle café, visitors can rent a picnic basket and enjoy it in the park, by the shore of Lake Hjälmaren or in the oak park. Choosing between the park, oak park and lakeshore gives the picnic a different setting each time.
Getting active around Stora Sundby
The “Stora Sundby motionsspår” exercise trail starts at the entrance road to Stora Sundby Castle; its surface is easy to walk on. This is a local walking option with a clearly marked starting point.
Hjälmarleden is on a different scale: this cycling and hiking route, approximately 299 kilometres long, circles Lake Hjälmaren, with Stora Sundby Castle as a historical stop along the way. Hjälmarleden is under development, and the published routes are suggestions. Check route conditions before setting out. This makes it easy to distinguish between the exercise trail by the castle and a longer tour around the lake.
