Vittsjö combines a lake landscape, forests and hiking trails with a long history as a spa town: the town has been a spa resort since the 19th century.

Forests and lake scenery

The Ubbalt Nature Reserve lies on Verumsåsen, east of Lake Vittsjön. Old beech forest dominates the area. In areas with beeches over a hundred years old, there is a rich variety of lichens and mosses.

The Skåneleden trail runs through Ubbalt. Stage 9 leads through varied forests to the lake district of Vittsjö. Vittsjö offers opportunities for walks and hikes along the trail.

Choose trails by length and scenery

Vittsjön runt starts at Vittsjö station and is listed as 9.3 kilometres long—approximately ten kilometres. The walking and hiking trail offers views of Lake Vittsjön. The Lehultsrundan is shorter, at 7.9 kilometres, and passes through spruce and mixed forest, clear-cuts and old farmland. If you are choosing based on scenery, Vittsjön runt offers lake views, while the Lehultsrundan passes through spruce and mixed forest and across clear-cuts and old farmland. The trails therefore offer different landscapes.

The Vieåleden is a circular hiking trail, open seasonally, that is about 11 to 14 kilometres long. Its landscape includes deciduous and coniferous forests, as well as rapids and ravines. As the Vieåleden is open seasonally, check before setting out whether your planned dates fall within the season. The different trail descriptions highlight different features: lake views, forests and farmland, or rapids and ravines.

History along the trail and in town

Skeingeborg lies along the Vieåleden. The medieval castle ruin is known for its octagonal ring wall and is considered a unique medieval ring-wall ruin, about 900 years old, set in the heart of nature. Vittsjöborg was built in the 1330s and destroyed by fire about 30 years later. At Skeingeborg, the octagonal ring wall is a defining feature of the ruin; Vittsjöborg’s history centres on when it was built and its destruction by fire.

The town’s history as a spa resort gives it another distinctive theme. Vittsjö has been a spa resort since the 19th century. The wider Vittsjö-Verum parish is in northern Skåne, on the border with Småland, about 30 kilometres north of Hässleholm.

Fishing and getting around

The Vittsjön fishing area includes Lillasjö, Högholmsjön, Oresjön, Mellomsjön, Pickelsjön, Lehultasjön, Hårsjön, Gustav Adolf-ån and part of the Vieån. Fishing permits for Lake Vittsjön are available at Vittsjöhallen and Vittsjö Camping.

Vittsjö has good connections on the Pågatågen trains. The town of Hässleholm is close to Vittsjö. For travel planning, the Pågatågen connections and the station, which is the starting point for Vittsjön runt, offer two practical reference points in the town.
