Tjörnarp combines hiking loops, lakeside nature and historical traces into a diverse destination in Sweden. Those wishing to combine nature experiences and culture during their stay will find short and longer trails, wetlands, fishing opportunities and places connected to regional history. Access to the hiking trails is also a practical consideration: the trails around Tjörnarp can be reached by the Pågatåg.

Hiking trails around Tjörnarp

For a manageable tour, the green-marked Bokskogsrundan is a good option. The hiking loop is 3 km long and runs partly outside the Prästabonnaskogen nature reserve. The red-marked Tjörnarpssjön runt follows a 5.8 km route around the lake; most of the route lies outside Prästabonnaskogen.

Those wishing to include a longer connection in their hiking plans can consider the 3 km trail from Prästabonnaskogen northwards to Skåneleden SL2, Stage 6. The section is described in a north–south direction. For orientation on site, it is also important to note that Prästabonnaskogen lies between Tjörnarpssjön, the church and the railway station in Tjörnarp.

Wetlands, lake and nature observation

In the western part of Prästabonnaskogen, below Tjörnarps kyrka, there is a landscaped wetland with a viewing platform. The Tegeldammarna-Lergravarna nature reserve offers a different landscape impression: it consists largely of wet woodland with a high proportion of deadwood as well as a species-rich bird and insect population. The area includes the former clay pit that once belonged to Gunnarps bruk.

There are fishing jetties at Tjörnarpssjön. Three rowing boats can be rented from the sellers of fishing permits based in Tjörnarp. The bathing area by the lake can be reached on foot from Tjörnarp railway station. It has bathing jetties, rescue equipment, a toilet, waste disposal facilities and an information board providing details including bathing water quality. This makes it possible to plan a stay by the water differently from a purely hiking tour.

Industrial history and older traces

Gunnarps tegelbruk complements the nature experiences with an illustrative chapter in brickmaking. The site is open to visitors and has information boards about the brickworks. The restored ring kiln was restored in 1993–94, has 18 firing chambers and arched passages lined with bricks. Those interested in the structural traces of its former use can deliberately include this site in their day’s itinerary.

The history of Tjörnarp also goes further back. Ruins of the church dating from the 12th century remain at the old church site, about 300 metres from the present-day church. A few hundred metres east of Tjörnarps kyrka there are also stone settings that probably date from the Late Iron Age. The historical classification remains tied to the specific site in each case.

Another way to combine exercise and industrial history is the blue-marked Tegelbruksrundan. The hiking trail is 4.7 km long in total; part of it runs through the Tegeldammarna-Lergravarna nature reserve. When choosing your hotel in Tjörnarp, you can therefore decide whether a short loop around the lake, a longer hiking section, nature observation or the history of the brickworks should be the main focus of your stay.
