Södra Rörum combines a long history of churches with a varied cultural landscape. Anyone wishing to include nature, local history and garden culture in their travel plans will find a range of themes here: in the Hjällen Nature Reserve, wooded heights, wet marshes and grazed Fälad pastures meet; in the village, the history of a church dates back to the 11th or 12th century. A garden, the seasonal Midsummer celebration at Husaren and fishing opportunities in the surrounding area add further highlights. You can weigh up these interests without combining them into a single excursion itinerary.

Landscape and Nature

Several types of landscape come together in the Hjällen Nature Reserve: wooded heights, wet marshes and grazed Fälad pastures. Large parts of the beech forest have remained largely untouched since the 19th century. Alongside its varied landscapes, this long continuity gives the area a sense of history. You can also walk around Hjällen without needing to stick to paths. Södra Rörum is part of a ridge and lies on its slope. At the same time, the area is a farming landscape with valuable flora. The travel experience therefore encompasses both the landscape of the nature reserve and the character of the village.

Church History in the Village

Church history offers a different focus on time. Södra Rörum has had a church since the 11th or 12th century. The present-day Södra Rörums kyrka was built in 1884–1887, replacing an older medieval church on this site. One date describes the long-standing presence of a church in the village, while the other marks the construction of the current church building. This distinction helps separate local history from the history of the building: the medieval predecessor and the building from the late 19th century belong to successive periods. For visitors interested in culture, this sequence offers a starting point for exploring the history of the area chronologically.

Gardens, Fishing and Seasonal Events

The Södra Rörum 4189 garden features a growing collection of 360 varieties of roses. It also has around a hundred perennials and shrubs in large beds. The garden brings together different aspects of horticulture: the variety of rose cultivars and complementary plantings of perennials and shrubs. If you are interested in plant cultivation, you can take this focus into account alongside the landscape and history when planning your trip.

In the wider area around Södra Rörum, Kvesarumssjön offers fishing from jetties and designated fishing spots. Float fishing, spin fishing and fly fishing are recommended. These three methods give anglers different ways to spend time by the water. This means you can distinguish between two nature-focused activities in your itinerary: a walk in the Hjällen Nature Reserve and fishing in the wider area around the village.
