Norravaralov: Craft, History and Flowers
Accommodation in Norravaralov
When choosing a trip to Norravaralov, specific interests are more helpful than a general holiday image: craftsmanship, architectural history, remembrance, seasonal flower picking and exercise in the surrounding area offer different points of interest. These themes are not all tied to the same time of year. The flower selection changes with the seasons, while the history of Kastanjegården and Varalövs Tunnfabrik can be explored through specific construction and production dates. Consider whether you would prefer to focus on craftsmanship, historic sites, flowers or a running route.
Wooden barrel-making and factory visits
Varalövs Tunnfabrik has been making wooden barrels since 1879. The cooperage craft therefore offers a clear point of interest that is both historical and hands-on. Tunnfabrik offers factory tours and study visits; the specific arrangements may vary. If either type of visit is important to your plans, confirm the details in advance. Unlike Kastanjegården’s architectural history, the focus here is not on a single building, but on the making of wooden barrels.
Flowers by season
Varalövs Gårdsbutik offers flowers for self-picking during opening hours. The season begins with tulips in April; in summer and into early autumn, there are up to around 50 different varieties of cut flowers. This makes the outing different from the historical themes: April is the seasonal reference point for tulips, while the wider selection of varieties is available in the summer months and early autumn. If you want to include flowers in your plans, time your visit according to this seasonal sequence.
Kastanjegården: architectural history and interiors
The main building at Kastanjegården was built in 1850 by estate owner and farmer Jöns Nilsson and his wife Kerstin. Kastanjegården was formerly known as Norra Varalöv 4. The large living room features a continuous oil-painted frieze, as well as large paintings on the walls. The frieze runs around the room, while the paintings cover the wall surfaces: the building date and interior design thus offer two distinct points of interest in the site’s history. The former name reflects a historical form of the name, while 1850 records the year the main building was built.
Plague cemetery and memorial stone
The plague cemetery associated with Norra Varalöv measures 50 × 40 metres and is oriented from east to west. Eighty-eight people are buried at the plague cemetery in Strövelstorp. A pointed memorial stone made of natural grey stone bears the inscription “P.M.S. I.H.S. 1711”. The dimensions and orientation describe the site, while the stone’s shape and inscription provide a specific memorial marker.
Running route in the surrounding area
A moderately difficult running route is associated with the area around Norra Varalöv: it is 6.08 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 1 metre. The route length, elevation gain and difficulty rating serve different purposes: 6.08 kilometres gives the distance, 1 metre the elevation gain; “moderate” is a separate difficulty rating. Check the route conditions and access before using it. This makes it possible to consider the route as a distinct way to get active, separate from seasonal flowers and historical themes.
