Höllviken: Coast, Nature and Viking Culture

Between Viking culture and protected coastal landscapes

Höllviken offers various points of interest to consider when choosing your stay: cultural and historical impressions, protected coastal areas, sandy beaches and marked hiking trails. This contrast is particularly evident at Foteviken Viking Village, in the Skanör-Höll nature reserve and around the historic traces of Bredeväg and the Falsterbo Canal.

Foteviken Viking Village: History to See and Experience

Foteviken Viking Village is a reconstructed settlement based on archaeological finds. It illustrates what a village might have looked like and what life may have been like from the late Viking Age to the early Middle Ages. This means that the focus is not only on a historical subject, but also on how vividly you would like to experience history.

At Foteviken Viking Village, you can try practical activities. These include working with bands, casting your own tin jewellery pendant, axe throwing, archery and a mini archaeology game. These activities give the visit different focal points without replacing the historical context of the reconstructed village.

Beach, Dunes and Historic Coastal Pastures

The Skanör-Höll nature reserve lies on the western shore of Höllviken. It preserves a very well-preserved remnant of the historic coastal pasture landscape. The area can be explored via the marked Skåneleden trail, making it particularly appealing to visitors who want to combine nature observation and hiking.

In the south of Höllviken lies the kilometre-long, chalk-white sandy beach of Kämpinge strandbad. Together with the area east of the Falsterbo Canal, it forms part of the Kämpinge strandbad nature reserve. There, a dune landscape and an open pine forest stretch along the coast. Höllviken Höllvikstrand is indicated as the nearest bus stop for orientation within this nature reserve.

Maritime History and Routes through Höllviken

Bredeväg is a reminder of a historic sea transport route to Skanör. It was used until the port of Skanör was built at the end of the 19th century. Heavier goods were transferred from lighters anchored in Höllviken to small cargo boats and transported via Bredeväg to Skanör. This history illustrates the role that the waterway and the transport of goods played in connecting the towns.

Today’s Falsterbo Canal also shapes the area’s maritime character. The canal is 1,600 metres long and features the movable Höllviksbron bridge. Today, it is a popular harbour for small boats with excellent service and a restaurant. Along Route 100, you can also find the bronze sculpture Kassandra. It appears to have been shaped by the winds and waves of the sea.

The Öresundsleden hiking trail also passes through Höllviken.
