If you are weighing cultural history against walks as you plan your trip, Hanaskog offers several specific points of interest. The manor’s history and the lime works tell different chapters of the place’s story; walking trails and the summer outdoor pool complement these themes with outdoor activities. This lets you decide which side of Hanaskog is of particular interest for your trip.

Manor, Park and Landscape

The main building of Hanaskog Manor is a two-storey red-brick structure. It was built in 1852–1854 and designed by the architect H J Strömberg in a period style inspired by the Middle Ages. The building’s form, materials and style description offer different clues: the two storeys and red brick define the structure, while the design points to medieval inspiration. This is a later building, not a medieval one.

The park at Hanaskog Manor was laid out in the first half of the 19th century. Its origins therefore predate the construction years of the main building. To understand the timeline, it is worth considering the park and the building as two separate stages: first the park was laid out, then the present-day main building was constructed. The manor is also set in a landscape of broad fields and straight roads lined with avenues of trees. The open agricultural landscape and the red-brick building are distinct, equally concrete aspects of the character of the place.

The Lime Works and Historic Dates

Hanaskog’s historic lime works include two preserved lime kilns: one dates from 1873 and the other from 1929. Both are gas-fired kilns that replaced older ring kilns. The two kiln dates are 56 years apart, so they can be understood as different stages in the history of the lime works. Operations at the lime works ceased in the early 1960s. The two kiln dates therefore tell of changes within the site, while the cessation of operations marks the later end of its industrial use.

Hanaholm is also part of the history of Hanaskog Manor: it was the manor’s fortified predecessor and stood on three islands in the Helge å, northeast of present-day Hanaskog. Kviinge Church in Hanaskog provides another historical landmark. It is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th to 13th century. Its date is much earlier than the construction years of the manor’s main building and the two lime kilns. Those interested in different historical periods will find several clearly distinct themes here: the Romanesque church, the history of the manor and the industrial history of the lime works.

Hanaskogsbadet is an outdoor swimming pool that is open daily in summer. As it is a seasonal facility, check that it is open before your visit. This way, you can include the pool in your plans without assuming that it operates year-round.
