Bjärred: Coast, Nature and History

Bjärred combines a distinctive coastal setting with nature trails and tangible traces of its history. If you would like to choose between a bathing pier, woodland scenery, coastal walks and sites of cultural and historical interest during your trip, you will find a range of experiences here within a compact thematic area.

Långa bryggan and Bjärred’s Saltsjöbad

The defining coastal landmark is Långa bryggan, a bathing pier complex in Bjärred that is approximately 500 metres long. At its outer end are a cold-bath house and a restaurant. The beach at Långa bryggan has Blue Flag status, an international environmental award.

At Bjärred’s Saltsjöbad, paths lead through a beech forest more than 100 years old. The forest developed from park trees around the former Saltsjöbaden bathing establishment, which operated during the first half of the 20th century. The landscape is therefore not only one of the area’s natural attractions, but also preserves a historical layer of its former bathing culture. The area of Bjärred’s Saltsjöbad, with the Långa bryggan beach baths and the surrounding nature reserve, is of great importance for swimming and outdoor recreation.

Coastal paths for active days

The Löddeköpinge–Bjärred section of the Skåneleden trail follows a coastal hiking route to the salt baths at Bjärred’s Saltsjöbad and the Långa bryggan bathing pier complex. Along the way, the section passes houses that bear witness to Bjärred’s history as a summer resort for wealthy residents of Lund. Another stage runs from Bjärred past horse paddocks, built-up areas, beaches, ponds, surfing spots and pine groves; at the quay, it continues into the centre of Lomma. This stage has good public transport connections. This makes it possible to experience the coastal landscape as a route between different townscapes, rather than limiting your stay to a single beach area.

Brickmaking history and Bergakyrkan

The Bjersunds Tegelbruksmuseum brings the area’s industrial past to life through several buildings and facilities. The museum includes a brick kiln, a drying shed, a coal cellar, as well as workers’ housing and a house for the brickworks manager. The former Bjersunds tegelbruk south of the built-up area of Bjärred dates from the mid-19th century and demonstrates how a brickworks from that period operated. Particularly noteworthy is the periodic vaulted kiln: it has considerable cultural and historical value because only a few such kilns have survived.

Bergakyrkan also stands in the south of Bjärred and forms part of a three-winged complex. Its design combines modern architecture with traditional building traditions. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, a small place for meditation and silence was established there in 1994. The church thus complements the area’s coastal and industrial history with a site whose documented significance lies in architecture and quiet contemplation. Bjärred is therefore suitable for a trip in which the beach, coastal paths, forest and historical evidence all play an equally important role in shaping the character of the stay.
