St. Peter's Church and historical evidence

Around 1230, the three-nave brick hall church of St. Peter was built in Landkirchen; the free-standing wooden church tower dates from 1638. Its external appearance is therefore defined by a brick structure and a free-standing wooden tower. Inside are a Baroque altar and the more than 800-year-old Landesblock. This is a heavy chest carved from an oak trunk that formerly held Fehmarn's most important official documents. St. Peter's Church also contains a Marian crown dating from around 1390. The furnishings also include a Baroque pulpit from 1727 and two votive ships, including Germany's oldest model ship, dating from 1617. A collection of prayer stools from the 17th and 18th centuries bears inscriptions and house marks of Fehmarn families. During a guided church tour, the church guide Georg Marquardt tells stories about art, people, and customs surrounding the church. In addition to the church building itself, the furnishings draw attention to various aspects of local history. The Landesblock leads from the sacred furnishings to Fehmarn's earlier administrative history, as its historical function extends beyond the church interior.
