Kihelkonna – Church, National Park and Cycling Routes

Church and Traces of Local History

St. Michael's Church in Kihelkonna was built in the second half of the 13th century. The church contains one of Estonia's oldest post-Reformation altar walls; it dates from 1591. The free-standing campanile holds a special position: the tower was built in 1638 and is the only structure of its kind in Estonia. The tower was originally also used as a lighthouse. The church ensemble therefore offers several historical features that are not limited to a single construction date.

The monument to the Estonian War of Independence stands in the cemetery of Kihelkonna. It was unveiled on September 29, 1934. The present monument is an exact copy of the former monument. The community hall is also one of the town's cultural venues: theater performances, concerts, celebrations and seminars take place there.

Natural Environment and Trails in the Nearby Area

The Viidumäe cultural hiking trail is located nearby. The trail is 3.3 kilometers long and marked with blue trail markers. The cultural hiking trail also includes a car park with space for six passenger cars or three minibuses. The nearby Vilsandi National Park forms a considerably larger natural area. Around two-thirds of the park consists of an island-rich sea with approximately 160 islands. For cycling travelers, the Kihelkonna–Leisi cycling route is over 65 kilometers long and can be completed in two days. In addition, EuroVelo cycling routes 10 and 13 pass through Sääre, Kihelkonna and Võhma. The documented routes therefore range from a connection designed to take several days to inclusion in two European long-distance cycling routes. Which route you choose depends above all on whether you view Kihelkonna as part of a longer ride or as a reference point for a two-day route.
