Ruhnu: Island Nature, Beaches and Maritime Culture

Ruhnu combines protected coastal landscapes, diverse beaches and an unusually rich maritime and cultural history. Those who want to choose between nature experiences, beach days and island culture for their trip will find several clearly distinct highlights here: Ruhnu Hoiuala preserves coastal meadows as well as fore-, white, grey and wooded dunes. At the same time, it lies within the internationally significant Ruhnu nature area (EE0040462).

Beaches and the Island’s Landscape

Ruhnu’s coastline does not have a uniform beach character. Limo Beach is Ruhnu’s main summer beach because of its extensive sandy area. The eastern part of Kuunsi Beach is a narrow, 10-metre-wide beach with a dense covering of gravel and stones. West of Kuunsi Cape, by contrast, there is a low sandy beach. These differences also make the coastal sections interesting when choosing a specific destination for the day, without reducing the island to a single type of beach.

Churches, Lighthouse and Island History

The Ruhnu Museum provides a focused insight into the island’s history and everyday life. It displays around 300 objects used by the island’s inhabitants in their work and daily lives, complemented by photographs and texts about Ruhnu’s unique history and nature. Among the special exhibits are quartz tools approximately 8,000 years old, used by seal hunters.

The wooden Church of St. Magdalene is the oldest known surviving wooden building in Estonia; its construction began in 1643. Ruhnu’s two churches are still used for services, concerts, lectures and exhibitions. Another distinctive testament to the island’s history is the Ruhnu Lighthouse. It was built in 1877 on Håubjärre Hill, the highest point on Ruhnu, and is considered the only surviving lighthouse of its type in the Baltic Sea region.

Korsi Farm is around two hundred years old and is the only almost completely preserved farm complex of the Ruhnu Swedes in the world. Ruhnu Kultuuriait preserves the local cultural heritage and revives traditional crafts and ways of life. The workshops offered there include braiding bands and nets, rope-making, loom knitting, Ruhnu knitwear and ceramics made from local clay. These workshops must be booked in advance for groups.

Active Experiences and Local Offers

The island’s vibrant side can also be discovered in various ways. At Vetikafarm ja kalastusretked, visitors go out by boat with a local professional fisherman while nets are set or hauled in. Abelberg Farms welcomes visitors independently or together with the hosts and offers walks and smaller adventures on the island, during which Ruhnu’s stories and places are introduced.

Avasta Ruhnu’s offerings include nature walks and village tours. Avasta Ruhnu also rents bicycles and SUP boards. The experimental Planeet Ruhnu algae farm researches and cultivates local bladderwrack, adding an insight into research and the use of marine resources to the island’s nature-related themes.

Estonian native sheep have been kept on Ruhnu’s farms since the time of the Ruhnu Swedes. Ruhnu sheep wool is double-layered and is particularly suitable for felting, but it can also be spun into yarn. In summer, Ruhnu Rahvamaja presents exhibitions and historical film programmes. In winter, its programme includes film evenings as well as handicrafts, ceramics, board games and dance evenings.

Getting There and Further Orientation

For travel during the colder season, one specific connection is documented: an eight-seat aircraft operates on the Pärnu–Ruhnu–Kuressaare route from 1 October to 30 April. This seasonal information is therefore an important point to consider if you are planning a trip to Ruhnu outside the summer months.
