Accommodation in Püha
Püha combines a cultural and historical focus with nature and outdoor themes. It is also home to Püha Camp Centre with its tent pitches and the coastal Laidevahe Nature Reserve, where hikes can be arranged. The area’s features offer different ways to narrow down the kind of trip you are looking for.
Church Architecture and Furnishings in Püha
Püha St. James Church is one of the youngest medieval churches on Saaremaa. Its present form took shape over three major building phases. The structure therefore encompasses several periods of construction, while individual furnishings add their own details, dated to later periods. The massive tower is thought to have been built in the last decades of the 15th century; the wood used in its construction was felled between 1481 and 1486.
The Baroque altar dates from 1753 and was made by master craftsman Gottfried Böhme from Kuressaare. The pulpit dates from 1793 and features Neoclassical forms. The altar is Baroque, while the pulpit is Neoclassical. The architectural details extend beyond the furnishings: the church has two fireplaces, one on the upper floor of the sacristy and one in the tower. The building phases, tower, fireplaces, and artworks offer architecture enthusiasts a range of specific themes through which to explore the church’s history.
Soobiku Discovery Trail and Pihtla Community Park
Soobik is a local natural feature in the form of a bog island. The Püha Soobiku Discovery Trail is about 1 km long and has nine themed activity stations. Visitors can cross a body of water on a raft along the trail. In this way, the route combines the bog island as a nature theme with activity stations and a specific activity along the way.
The trail ends at Pihtla Community Park. There are low adventure courses for younger and older children. For families, both the approximate trail length and the explicitly mentioned facilities at the endpoint are relevant features.
Tent Pitches and Open Spaces
Püha Camp Centre offers unlimited tent pitches on a 1.6-hectare site. Facilities include a park and grassy areas, a volleyball court with a firm sandy surface, a full-size basketball court, a campfire site, and a large village swing. The amenities offer various ways to spend time outdoors, from ball games to relaxing in the park. If you are planning a tent stay, you can take the tent pitches and the specific open-air facilities into account when making your travel plans. Before arriving, it is advisable to confirm the current conditions and arrangements directly with the Camp Centre.
Hiking in Laidevahe Nature Reserve
The coastal Laidevahe Nature Reserve is 8 km from Püha St. James Church. Hikes can be arranged there; if you plan to take one, arrangements should be confirmed locally. Alongside church architecture and the Discovery Trail, this offers another way to experience nature, with planning that involves making arrangements on site.
