Muhu Vald: Island Culture, Nature and Short Distances

A central place for cultural history is the Muhu Museum. The Tooma farmstead at the museum is the birthplace of the writer Juhan Smuul. At the Välja farmstead, the office building of the Muhu Museum, traditional Muhu textiles with colorful embroidery and patterns are on display.

You can also encounter notable evidence of the island’s history outside the museum. Muhu St. Catherine’s Church has been mentioned in chronicles since 1267 and is an Early Gothic building. Koguva is Estonia’s best-preserved village ensemble. At the Eemu windmill, information panels explain its construction and operation; World War I defensive trenches lie next to the windmill.

The 10-inch coastal defense battery No. 36 at Võiküla adds to this historical picture. Construction began in 1915, and during World War I it belonged to the I Battalion of the fortified position at the Muhu Strait. The battery is well preserved on the site, even though its gun emplacements and the massive concrete forward wall are partly overgrown. The cobblestone road at Võiküla is in good condition.

Nature and Active Experiences

For nature enthusiasts, the approximately 300-meter-long Üügu cliff is a distinct landscape feature. Erosion in the limestone has created cave-like cavities there. The Muhu nature trail follows a field road intended primarily for hiking. Its longer section is marked in blue, while the shorter section is marked in red on trees and stones.

At Muhu Adventure Park, you can explore Soviet military roads. There is also a nature and educational trail nearby focusing on military history and the plants, birds and insects found there. In Tihuse, visitors who do not wish to ride can take a walk along a cultural history trail where they can explore old traditions.

Short Distances and Local Flavors

Distances on Muhu are short, so you can easily get around by bicycle, boat or on horseback. This opens up different perspectives on the island without requiring any particular form of travel. In the center of Liiva, Muhu Pagarid bakes fresh bread in a small bakery. Liiva Food Street offers a mix of different flavors associated with summer on Muhu.

Another culinary stop is Luscher & Matiesen Muhu Veinitalu. Wine tastings are offered there, complemented by insights into winemaking and the history of Estonian wine.
