If you are looking for accommodation in Mārupe, you can choose what to explore based on your travel interests: local history, public spaces and physical activities sit alongside attractions in the surrounding area. The specific highlights range from a clock monument and cultural centre to BMX, horse riding and water sports. This makes it easy to decide in advance which of these you want to shape your stay.

Local History and Public Spaces

Konrādu Square opened in September 2012 as Mārupe’s first public square. It is home to a clock monument, unveiled in 2015. The pedestal features facts about the history of the district. The square also has paved paths and seating, as well as a children’s playground, lighting and free public Wi-Fi. The square thus offers several different points of interest: local history at the monument and practical amenities in a public space.

The foundation stone for what is now Mārupe Cultural Centre was laid in September 1936. The building was constructed as a house for the Aizsargi organisation and was formerly known as Aizsargu nams. If you are interested in the town’s architectural history, you can combine this stop with the clock monument at Konrādu Square, while keeping in mind that they have different dates and historical functions.

The Tourism and Crafts House at 10 Bebru Street opened in 2022. Its purpose was to promote the district’s tourism offer and introduce visitors to craftspeople and home producers. Another local landscape feature is the Mārupīte River, which flows through the Mārupe area.

Culture and History in the Surrounding Area

In the area around Mārupe, the Riga Aviation Museum has an exhibition on aviation, space technology and air traffic control equipment. The collection includes 47 exhibits, among them rare or unique military aircraft and helicopters. The museum offers a different focus from the local history at Konrādu Square: here, the emphasis is on technological development and aviation.

Švarcenieku Manor is also in the surrounding area. It was built in 1826 as the summer residence of manor owner Švarcs and used for hunting and recreation. In 2016, it was designated a locally significant architectural monument. The manor park has paths, picnic areas, benches, bicycle racks, an information board and lighting. Lapiņmuiža, by contrast, is privately owned; check access before planning a possible visit.

Activities and Leisure

Mārupe’s BMX Sports Park has a track with a four-metre-high starting hill and various banked turns. Bicycles and helmets are also available for hire. In the surrounding area, Tīraines Stables offers riding lessons, along with paddocks, pastures, a training ground and an indoor riding arena. BMX and horse riding represent different kinds of active recreation; the facilities and activities mentioned are each associated with a specific location.

The JIP Mārupīte leisure complex in the surrounding area offers swimming, beach volleyball, football and wakeboarding. Mārupe is also home to the Purnavu Manor Hunting Centre, which has the only enclosed 100-metre shooting range in the Baltics. There is a hunting simulator and hunting courses, through which participants can obtain a hunting licence.

The Tīraine ice-skating and roller-skating track is described as being freely accessible to all residents year-round, in both summer and winter. Check its current operating status before setting out.

A Local Treat

Meraki Bake House is in the centre of Mārupe, at 27 Daugavas Street. The offerings include brownies, desserts, cakes and macarons. This is a specific culinary spot in town, while the nearby cultural and leisure attractions appeal to other interests.
