Tczew is located on the Vistula River in the Pomeranian Voivodeship in northern Poland. The city is part of the historic region of Pomerania and the ethnocultural region of Kociewie.

Culture and History

Tczew’s historic character includes a medieval old town, Gothic churches, and historic bridges over the Vistula. Tczew is home to the Vistula Museum – the Vistula River Museum –, which is regarded as a museum dedicated to the history of the Vistula, Poland’s longest river. Next to the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, there is a column featuring a figure of the Virgin Mary and Child.

Archaeological work and investigations uncovered the remains of a medieval moat in Tczew. The moat had been filled in at the end of the 16th century. Finds associated with the moat included vessel fragments, stove tiles, shoes, wooden vessels, thimbles, coins, book fittings, and seals dating from the late 14th to the late 16th century.

The medieval history also includes a former castle built by the Teutonic Knights in 1309. Its remains were later removed; exposed castle walls and foundations of the complex remain.

Tczew is described as the largest railway junction in northern Poland, with rail connections toward Gdańsk, Bydgoszcz, Warsaw, and Chojnice.
