Sztum is located on Lake Zajezierskie and Lake Barlewickie. In the past, both lakes were parts of a single lake called Lake Białe.

Nature

Geographically, Sztum belongs to the cultural-geographical region of Powiśle and the western part of the Iławskie Lake District. The area around Sztum also includes Wzgorze nad Rumunkami and Malbork – Strusi ogród. Kamienna Góra is located in the wider regional surroundings of Sztum.

Culture and history

Sztum Castle was built as a brick castle in the second quarter of the 14th century, around 1326. Malbork – Zamek Krzyżacki, dating from the 13th to the 15th century, is located nearby. The wider regional surroundings of Sztum also include Gniew – Zamek Krzyżacki from the 13th century, Kwidzyn – Zamek from the 14th century, and St. Nicholas Church in Lisewo.

Regional classification

Sztum is the administrative seat and largest town of Sztum County. The county's other town is Dzierzgoń, 21 km east of Sztum. Sztum has a railway station with connections to, among other places, the Tricity, Grudziądz, Malbork, and Kwidzyn; Malbork is 14 km away and is a larger railway junction.

The marked blue Powiśle Churches Trail runs through the wider regional surroundings. It is 43.78 km long and leads, among other places, through Dzierzgoń, Mikołajki Pomorskie, Stary Targ, and Żuławka Sztumska.
