Hills, lake and river
The landscape around Godziszewo has numerous rises and hollows. Its hilly character was shaped by the Baltic glaciation. One notable elevation is Święta Góra: at 105.7 m above sea level, it is the highest point in Godziszewo. The expansive lake and this named high point both serve as landmarks in the landscape.
Lake Godziszewskie offers tourists opportunities to relax and enjoy activities by the water. The Styna adds another connection to the landscape as a river that flows through Godziszewo. Visitors interested in bodies of water can appreciate the lake and the river as distinct local features, without treating them as a single body of water.
Route and orientation
The northern section of the Jezior-Kociewskich Trail runs between Skarszewy and Starogard Gdański. It is marked in red and is 38.2 km long. At kilometre 11.5, the route passes Lake Godziszewskie; at kilometre 11.6, it passes the Styna.
The road connections also help locate Godziszewo: a main route from Starogard Gdański to Gdańsk runs through the village in a south–north direction. A second main route runs from Skarszewy to Tczew from west to east. These two axes describe the different directions that pass through Godziszewo.
Church and historical traces
The present-day Church of St John of Nepomuk is a single-nave Baroque building, erected in 1748 on a small hill. One of its distinctive features is its original Rococo interior, considered one of the most valuable in Kociewie. The vestibule also houses a Renaissance tombstone for Jan Wiesiołowski and his wife Justyna z Branickich. The church thus brings together several different historical elements of interest to visitors interested in cultural history: the Baroque building, the Rococo interior and the Renaissance tombstone.
Historical points of interest can also be found outside the church. Godziszewo has a Roman Catholic cemetery dating from the beginning of the 20th century, which is included in the inventory of monuments. Former mill-related structures have been preserved on the Styna. Their historical function sets them apart from the river and lake’s present-day recreational appeal.
Godziszewo is one of the oldest settlements in Pomerania. Finds of hand-formed pottery suggest that the settlement may already have existed in the 8th century, in the early Middle Ages. This cautious interpretation is part of the village’s history: the finds point to early settlement, while Godziszewo is also regarded as one of Pomerania’s oldest settlements.
