Tiegenhof, the German name for Nowy Dwór Gdański, lies in the Great Żuławy Wiślane area on the Tuga River. A drawbridge over the Tuga stands in the centre of Nowy Dwór Gdański. It was built in 1936 and restored in 2019. The water tower also links a specific year of construction with a readily grasped height: it was built in 1909, stands 30 metres tall and is located in the town park on Tuwima Street. By the water, there is also a canoe station on the waterfront promenade along Wejhera Street. Together with the Tuga, the municipality’s main waterway, it gives water a place of its own in your travel plans. A project also envisages the construction of 23 kilometres of cycle paths in the Gmina Nowy Dwór Gdański. These are part of EuroVelo R-10 and the Wiślana Trasa Rowerowa R-9; this figure refers to a planned project.
Museum, culture and Mennonite history
The Żuławy Museum is located in the Żuławski Park Historyczny, in a former cheese and dairy building dating from 1902. The museum houses Poland’s largest exhibition about the Mennonites. This makes the history of the Mennonites and the region’s past a useful focus for exploring the area. The former dairy and cheese building also adds the history of the building itself to this perspective.
In Nowy Dwór Gdański, the Żuławski Ośrodek Kultury organises workshops, concerts, performances, meetings and artistic projects. The cultural centre also runs the ŻUŁAWY cinema. These different formats make culture a distinct part of the town’s profile, spanning community gatherings and workshops as well as film, music and performances.
Another way to explore the area’s history is the Mennonite Trail in the surrounding municipality. It includes several historic cemeteries in Orłowo, Stawiec, Marynowy, Różewo and Żelichowo. Numerous stelae, cippi and cast-iron crosses have been preserved there. The locations and forms of the grave markers give this topic a distinct, tangible focus alongside the museum exhibition. The Stobbes Machandel distillery, founded in 1776 in Nowy Dwór Gdański, is also part of the local history. The famous juniper schnapps Machandel was produced there until 1945.
