Sturefors appeals to travellers interested in historic garden design and an ancient cultural landscape. The castle park includes a partly preserved French-style garden, a reflecting pool and paths dating from the 18th century. The Sturefors and Vistkärret nature reserves offer their own distinctive landscapes of pastures, woodland and reed beds. When choosing a hotel, you might therefore consider whether you want your stay to focus on castle history, a circular walk, or an activity in nature or on the water.

Castle Park and Garden Design

Most of Sturefors Castle Park is open to the public. The park covers 11 hectares and has four kilometres of paths laid out in the 18th century. The partly preserved French-style garden includes a reflecting pool, avenues and parterres. Parterres are formally designed garden areas. On a walk around the park, you can take in the different elements of its design: the water, avenues and divided garden sections.

The Castle Ensemble and Historic Traces

Sturefors Castle was built in the first decade of the 18th century and was partly designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger. In 1976, the castle ensemble, including its castle buildings and park, was declared a listed building. Sturefors is a remarkably well-preserved and active castle and estate. The park is therefore explicitly part of the protected ensemble and complements the castle’s architectural history with the design of its gardens.

The Sturefors lock is located right by Ärlången Lake, next to the castle. It has a level difference of 3.2 metres, offering another concrete glimpse into the area’s history of water engineering.

Another historic trace leads to Vist Church. The southern part of Vist cemetery is medieval. The runestone came to light beneath the church floor during clean-up work after the 1961 fire. It was repaired in October 1965 and placed beside the newly built church. While the castle’s history draws attention primarily to its construction and ensemble, this discovery links a specific event to a later step in preserving the stone.

Nature, Circular Walk and Water

The Sturefors Nature Reserve consists of open pastures, oak pastures and broadleaf woodland in an ancient cultural landscape. Vistkärret offers a different setting: wild swamp forest predominates there, alongside wide belts of reeds and grazed broadleaf woodland along the banks of the Stångån. The two landscapes offer different points of interest for nature lovers.

The Rördromsstigen circular trail in Vistkärret is about 1.1 kilometres long and fully accessible. By comparison, the four kilometres in the castle park describe the network of paths as a whole; Rördromsstigen is a single, clearly defined loop. Canoes and kayaks can be launched or taken out at the car park of the Sturefors Nature Reserve.

Getting to the Nature Reserve

You can take a bus from Linköping to Sturefors and get off at the “Vist skola” stop. From there, you can cover the remaining distance to the nature reserve by bicycle or on foot along the road. Check the bus timetable before your trip.
