Roxenbaden is on the north shore of Lake Roxen. The history of its summer houses, the landscape and Sandvik beach offer different points of reference when choosing a place to stay: If swimming is your priority, Sandvik is a specific option; if you are interested in architectural history, you can explore the different types of summer houses and the periods in which they were built. The area is also relevant to cycling trips, as Roxenbaden is listed as a destination on the “Roxen runt” cycling route.

Summer Houses and Local History

Four types of summer houses can be distinguished in Roxenbaden: houses designed by architects or master builders, catalogue-built houses, houses built by their owners, and older cottages that were moved from other places and used as summer houses. These categories offer several perspectives on local history: they encompass different building methods as well as the continued use of older, relocated buildings.

The oldest summer villas date from shortly after 1900. They stand on spacious plots that slope steeply down to Lake Roxen; traces of terracing and steps can be found in most gardens. To understand these early villas, the houses and their grounds go together: the hillside setting and visible traces of garden design also shape the way the plots have been described. The area around Roxenbaden saw another period of intensive development of new summer-house areas in the 1960s. The early villas and this later phase of development represent different historical perspectives on summer houses.

A Landscape of Open Land and Woodland

The central landscape area of Roxenbaden, along Route 1136, includes old cultivated land that is kept mostly open. The recreational landscape also includes woodland, large solitary trees, groups of trees, pastureland and ravines. The ravines are designated as valuable habitats. This gives the area a varied landscape: alongside open cultivated land are woodland and other tree-covered areas, pastureland and ravines. If the landscape is especially important to you when choosing a place to stay, these are different aspects to consider.

Sandvik: Swimming and Accommodation

Sandvik on Lake Roxen is a beach. During the swimming season, from 15 May to 15 September, the water temperature is measured there. Sandvik beach has a car park for visitors; parking regulations may change, so check them before setting out. To find your way from Berg: Sandvik beach is reached via Stjärnorpsvägen, which you follow for about 2.5 kilometres.

The Sandvik recreation area is used for cabin rentals, camping, caravans and motorhomes. If you are considering one of these accommodation or camping options, check the operator and availability before your trip. This lets you take the specific information about Sandvik into account without confusing it with the question of which landscape or historical character of Roxenbaden you are looking for.

A Cycling Connection

Roxenbaden is listed as a destination on the “Roxen runt” cycling route. If cycling trips are important to your choice, this is a separate point of reference alongside Sandvik’s swimming facilities and the history of the summer houses. These different features can help you choose Roxenbaden based on what matters most to you during your stay.
