Rimforsa: Hiking, Nature and the Kinda Canal
Accommodation in Rimforsa
For a stay with hiking and experiences on the water, Rimforsa offers several specific starting points. The Östgötaleden leads from here in all directions, and the Kinda Canal passes by Rimforsa. The town is also a good base for visits along the canal. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you mainly want to hike, explore nature areas or include a boat trip.
Hiking the Östgötaleden
One stage of the Östgötaleden begins in Rimforsa: the Rimforsa–Sätravallen route. From here, you can also continue hiking along the trail in other directions. A hike north from Rimforsa can be combined with a boat trip on the Kinda Canal. This gives you different options for a day of hiking: a stage on foot, or a combination of a northbound hike and a canal trip. If you want to combine the two, check the timetable in advance, as boat times may change.
Hallstad ängar and the nature reserves
The Hallstad ängar Nature Reserve lies about 3.5 kilometres northwest of Rimforsa. Marked hiking trails connect it with the Borgarmon and Klevberget nature reserves; together, they form a loop of about three kilometres through all three areas. This approximate distance makes the route a clearly defined option for linking several protected areas on one hike. At Lake Järnlunden, Hallstad ängar also has a natural sandy beach with plenty of room for sunbathing, swimming and playing. Several picnic tables add to the facilities. You can think of a hike through the reserves and a break by the lake as two different parts of your nature outing.
Canal, landing stage and guest harbour
If you are planning a trip on the M/S Kind, finding your way to the landing stage is also part of the planning: you can park in the square in the centre of Rimforsa; the landing stage is about a ten-minute walk from there. Take this walk into account when planning your trip, and check current parking options before you arrive. You should also check the timetable for information about the trip.
For guests with their own boat, there is a guest harbour in Smedjeviken in Rimforsa, with three to four guest berths. The number of available berths may vary, so check availability in advance. The guest harbour in Rimforsa has a clubhouse, kitchen, toilet, shower and environmental station. This harbour infrastructure offers another option for travellers whose stay also involves time on the water.
History and annual market day
Rimforsa Gästgivargård, also known as Gästis, dates back to the late 17th century. Tjärstad Church offers another glimpse into the past: the church was built in 1778 to replace a round church from the 12th century. These two details offer a view of different periods in the local and church history.
The events calendar may also play a role in planning your trip. Rimforsa Market is held every year on the first Saturday after Midsummer. If you want to visit the market, check the exact date for that year’s event before your trip. This lets you plan your stay around a fixed event date, while hiking, nature reserves and experiences on the water offer other possible focuses for your time in Rimforsa.
