Rejmyre: Glass History, Craftsmanship and Nature
Accommodation in Rejmyre
In Rejmyre, glass culture, outdoor activities and a waterside landscape come together to appeal to different travel interests. When planning a stay, you can decide whether to focus on craftsmanship and history, a section of the Östgötaleden trail or Lake Hunn.
Glass History and Craftsmanship
Reijmyre Glassworks was founded in 1810 and is still in operation. The Rejmyre Glass Museum adds to this history: it displays historic glass and provides information about glassmaking over the centuries. The development of glassmaking and a business that is still operating today sit side by side—two different perspectives on glass.
The glass museum also displays a carriage from the time when the historic cableway was in operation. This brings the former cableway into focus alongside glass and its production. The carriage connects the exhibition with another chapter in local history.
The Glas- och hantverksbyn (Glass and Crafts Village) in Rejmyre is also part of the area’s cultural character. Several small workshops, shops and exhibitions showcase different forms of craftsmanship and ways of presenting it. For travel planning, this means that Rejmyre’s glass theme is not limited to the history of the glassworks or museum exhibits, but also includes workshops and exhibitions.
Macken i Rejmyre petrol station reveals another side of the area’s history. It was threatened with demolition before the local community joined forces and called for it to be preserved. Its story makes community involvement in preserving a local landmark another cultural theme, alongside glassmaking and craftsmanship.
The Östgötaleden Trail and Its Connection
Rejmyre is the starting point for the Rejmyre–Falsnäset section of the Östgötaleden trail. A marked 0.7 km connecting path leads from Rejmyre to the starting point of the Östgötaleden, where the section towards Falsnäset begins. The section itself runs mostly along gravel and forest paths and is also suitable for cycling. If you are looking to focus on outdoor activity, this offers a specific route option with a described surface and additional suitability for cycling.
Rejmyre can be reached by public transport. This information helps with choosing a destination and should be considered separately from the details about the marked connecting path and the route of the Östgötaleden.
Lake Hunn: Swimming and Paddling
Rejmyre badplats (Rejmyre bathing area) is located on Lake Hunn in a sheltered woodland setting. Large lawns, a sandy beach and a sandy lakebed define the site. Lake Hunn itself is a long, narrow lake set in woodland, with several islands and beaches, and is well suited to a day trip. This means that the bathing area’s described features and the broader landscape of islands and shorelines are both highlights around the lake.
Paddling offers another way to experience Lake Hunn: Rejmyre Kanotbas invites visitors to get out on the water, starting from Rejmyre. The bathing area and the canoe base appeal to different interests—spending time on a beach with lawns on the one hand, and an activity on the water on the other.
Church and Residency Art
Rejmyre kyrka (Rejmyre Church) was originally built as a works chapel at Reijmyre Glassworks for its employees. The wooden chapel, built in 1837, later became the church. This history connects the glassworks with the chapel’s original purpose without equating its historic construction with present-day conditions of use.
As part of the 2026–2027 residency, the Refuging Pavilion serves as a studio and meeting place for the artists in residence. The transparent dome, which resembles a greenhouse, is located in the heart of the glassworks village of Rejmyre. Its described form and its roles as a place to work and meet add a contemporary art connection to the historical themes.
