Accommodation in Ljungsbro
When planning a trip to Ljungsbro, you can focus on different things: the Göta Canal and its routes and structures, local history, or food and drink experiences. Nature is also part of the picture. If you’re looking for a hotel in Ljungsbro, it helps to first consider whether you’d rather spend your days on the water, cycling, in nature or enjoying culture.

Nature and waterside trails
The Motala ströms ravin nature reserve encompasses a damp deciduous forest in an old riverbed. The ravine is home to many rare and endangered species: birds, bats, butterflies, snails, mussels, mosses, lichens and fungi. The natural environment here extends beyond birdlife to include a wide range of animal and plant groups.
A 1.5 km hiking trail leads from the main entrance to the nature reserve to the reflecting pond at Jakobslund. The route has a clearly named starting point and a specific destination. If you’d like to plan a nature-focused hike, you can consider this trail as an option in its own right; its length and character differ from those of the canal routes.
Göta Canal: aqueduct, canoe route and cycling stage
The Göta Canal features in Ljungsbro in a number of ways. The Borensberg–Berg section of the Göta Canal Trail crosses the Ljungsbro Aqueduct. Here, the canal passes in a trough above the road below. The structure illustrates the distinctive connection between the waterway and the road along this section.
For a trip on the water, the Göta Canal Canoe Route runs from Lake Boren at Borensberg through the Göta Canal to the Malfors guest harbour in Ljungsbro. Cyclists can follow the fifth stage of the Göta Canal Cycle Route, which passes through Ljungsbro. These details offer different ways to explore the area: an aqueduct along one route section, a canoe route ending at Malfors guest harbour, and a cycling stage through the town.
Further afield in the region, the rest area at Skarpåsen is right on the canal bank. It’s a rest stop for hikers and cyclists between Berg and Borensberg, with a fire pit. Its location along the route and its fire pit give it a different purpose from the canal routes that pass through Ljungsbro.
Museum, Cloetta and regional specialities
Ljungsbro Museum presents several typical life stories from the period between 1650 and 1920. They come from Ljung, Vreta kloster, Stjärnorp and the surrounding area. The museum was founded to preserve and pass on Östergötland’s rich cultural heritage. Historical books, a shop and an outdoor café are also part of the museum’s offering.
Another specific connection to local history is the Cloetta factory in Ljungsbro, built by the Cloetta brothers in 1901. Also in Ljungsbro, the Cloetta shop stocks the full range of popular Cloetta products. Vreta Klosters Bryggeri offers brewery tours and beer tastings; food and drinks are available in the taproom. Malfors Café is located right on the Göta Canal in the heart of Ljungsbro. Families can also find swimming lessons for children of all ages at Ljungsbro Leisure Centre.
Several different themes are therefore available as you plan your trip: nature, a specific stretch of the canal, canoeing and cycling routes, as well as the museum and local history. You can shape your stay around whichever of these interests you most.
