In the Hällestads-Torp nature reserve, dry rock slabs alternate with wetter areas of forest. Mining history around Storgruvan and the architecture of Hällestads kyrka add two other themes to this focus on nature. You can get to know Hällestad according to your interests: through its forests and hiking, the history of iron ore, or a historic church building.

Hällestads-Torp Nature Reserve

In the reserve, you can hike across dry rock slabs with rugged pines and through wetter spruce forest with dense carpets of moss and lichen. Hällestads-Torp is an old coniferous forest with its original character intact. If you would like to experience different types of forest and ground on a hike, this contrast is a defining feature of the reserve. Visitors are welcome to explore the area on their own. There are no parking areas or other visitor facilities. Take this practical limitation into account when planning your visit.

Storgruvan: Mining History and Hiking Trails

Storgruvan provides a specific historical focus for Hällestad’s mining history. In the 17th century, it was Hällestad’s largest iron mine; its heyday came in the second half of the century. These dates point to two stages in its history: the 17th century describes Storgruvan’s position as Hällestad’s largest iron mine, while the second half of the century marks its heyday. Hiking trails around Storgruvefältet lead to several mines; a reconstruction of Storgruvan’s Trähäst stands south of the field. Hällestads Storgruva is about one kilometre long and can be visited as a shorter hiking route. This gives you a different focus when planning your day: the shorter route at Storgruvan or trails to several mines around Storgruvefältet.

The Gruvstuga by Storgruvan is a simple log-built hut with an attic. There is a scenic rest area by the Gruvstugan, as well as maps and brochures with information about the hiking trail. These materials provide a useful point of reference if you would like to learn about the trail. Visitor facilities also vary between the destinations described: there are none in the nature reserve, while the Gruvstugan has a rest area and hiking information. If these kinds of amenities are important to you, this difference may help you choose your outing.

Hällestads kyrka: Neo-Gothic Architecture

Hällestads kyrka offers an architectural counterpoint to the mining history. It was built between 1893 and 1895 from red, machine-made bricks, based on plans by architect Gustaf Petterson, and designed in the Neo-Gothic style typical of its time. The star vault in the choir was painted by artist Johan Krouthén. Neo-Gothic refers to a design inspired by Gothic architecture and helps place the style alongside the building’s date and materials. A star vault is a type of vault with ribs arranged in a star pattern; at Hällestads kyrka, it is complemented by Krouthén’s paintings in the choir.

The historical themes also differ considerably in age. Storgruvan’s heyday came in the second half of the 17th century, while the church was built between 1893 and 1895. This places an early modern high point in iron ore mining alongside a church building from the late 19th century whose dates are precisely known.
