Gryt combines sheltered archipelago nature with special water experiences, a bathing area and cultural attractions. When choosing where to stay, the deciding factor is above all the focus you want: the island world is all about nature and paddling, while the church, rose garden and bathing area reveal other facets of the area.

Archipelago nature with special access

The Gryt Nature Reserve is one of the archipelago gems of the Östergötland archipelago. Its seven sections represent most of the archipelago’s habitats that are particularly worthy of protection. This makes Gryt a destination for anyone who wants to experience a richly varied coastal landscape not only from land.

At the same time, an important access restriction applies: the islands within the Gryt Nature Reserve can only be reached by private boat. This information is important for understanding the area in practical terms, as the protected island world cannot simply be accessed by any means of transport. If you are planning your stay around nature or water experiences, you should take this distinction between the area of Gryt and the islands in the nature reserve into account.

Paddling tour, bathing area and water

Grytstriangeln offers an independent way to experience the archipelago from the water. It is a three-day paddling tour through the Gryt archipelago. It includes overnight stays on Harstena and Häradskär. Depending on the route chosen, Grytstriangeln covers a total of 40 kilometres of paddling.

For a stay by the water, there is also Sandgärdets havsbad in Gryt. The facility has a sandy beach and a grassy area for sunbathing. A diving tower adds to the amenities; jetties separate deeper and shallower water. Sandgärdets havsbad has also been adapted for people with disabilities and has a ramp into the water. This documents both different areas and a specific accessibility feature for entering the water.

Church, chapel and Kärlekens Trädgård

The cultural attractions also have their own distinctive character. Gryts kyrka is located on Kyrkön in Gryt, which was once surrounded by water. Inside the church, a large altarpiece painted by Pehr Hörberg dominates the room. The sacristy of Gryt’s former church has been preserved and now serves as S:t Olofs kapell. Thus, the present-day use of the chapel and the preserved building fabric of the former church come together at this site.

Kärlekens Trädgård is located in Lilla Vik in Gryt. The garden has thousands of roses of more than 450 varieties and displays life-size sculptures by Karola Messner. The combination of roses and sculptures gives the garden an artistic character in addition to its botanical diversity. It can be reached by car and by boat. This clearly distinguishes the site from the islands within the nature reserve, whose access requires a private boat.
