Tärendö: River History and Nature
Accommodation in Tärendö
The rivers give Tärendö a clear point of reference: the Tärendö River draws its water from the Torne River and carries it into the Kalix River. Tärendöholmen, a festival site, lies where the Kalix River and the Tärendö River meet. The river landscape, local history and nature experiences thus offer different ways to explore the area—from cultural heritage to trails and birdwatching.
Rivers and community gathering places
Even before it was used as a festival site, people visited Tärendöholmen for outings, swimming, games and dancing. The island was then a natural meeting place. Today, it serves as a festival site where the two rivers meet. Eldfesten takes place every year at the end of summer. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.
Church, museum and mill history
Tärendö Church stands by the Kalix River and was inaugurated on 18 April 1880. Hembygdsgården is a museum dedicated to Tornedalian Finnish farming culture. The two places offer insight into different aspects of local heritage: church history and farming culture.
Another historical trace is Kvarnen på Pänninsaari. The mill was actively used until 1953 and was then renovated in the 1980s, after water had taken its toll on the building over the years. These dates make clear the difference between its former use and its later restoration.
Trails, birds and water
One of Sweden’s oldest reindeer enclosures is located at Palolaki. The route there is marked with signs and trail markers; information boards provide details about nature and its animal and plant life. You can begin the hike via Männikövägen or Selkävaaravägen. Check current markings and trail conditions before setting out.
Suorsa Nature Reserve has a hiking trail approximately 4 km long. Its approximate length is a useful guide when planning a walk, but does not indicate how long the walk will take.
Near Tärendö lies Äihämäjärvi, which is protected as a bird sanctuary and Natura 2000 site and is considered a valuable wetland. Many bird species can be observed at Äihämääjärvi at different times of year; there are also two birdwatching towers there. Protected wetlands and birdwatching in different seasons are therefore key nature experiences in the area.
The entire Tärendö River can be paddled by canoe. Water conditions and facilities may change; check current local guidance before a canoe trip.
Forest, bog and community gardening
Tärendö’s forests and bogs offer opportunities to forage for porcini mushrooms, morels, lingonberries, blueberries and cloudberries, among other things. These seasonal nature experiences range from mushroom picking to gathering different kinds of berries.
Community gardening is also part of local life: at Tärendö Tillsammansodling, beginners and experienced gardeners grow food together and learn from one another. The project combines cultivation with exchange between people with different levels of knowledge.
