Kalix between a Free-Flowing River and Archipelago

Kalix offers several clearly distinct experiences: you can explore the free-flowing Kalix River, discover cultural history in the centre and along the river, choose island trails or enjoy activities for children. The Kalix River is one of Sweden’s four unregulated national rivers. Its water flows without dams, allowing fish to migrate freely upstream and downstream. Along this river, the Nationalälvsleden follows the free-flowing water for 20 kilometres. The route can also be cycled, combining a river landscape with active exercise.

Church, Log-Driving History and a Tour of Kalix

A central cultural landmark is Kalix kyrka, Sweden’s northernmost medieval church. Its construction probably began in the first half of the 15th century; the exact date of its construction is unknown. Companies can book a guided tour of Kalix kyrka on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The Log-Driving Museum is located in the former workers’ house, the former courthouse of Kalix. It provides information about log driving and timber sorting in the Kalix River until operations ceased in 1977. Vassholmen is also connected with this era: the island in the Kalix River was formerly a timber-sorting site. Vassholmen can be reached via an accessibility-adapted bridge. Those who wish to explore the town centre independently can use the City Tour – Kalix. The self-guided tour covers approximately 2.8 kilometres through the centre of Kalix.

Islands, Nature Reserve and Trails by the Water

The Kalix Archipelago comprises 792 islands, ranging from rocky skerries to sandy beaches. In the wider area around Kalix lies the Likskär Nature Reserve, an archipelago landscape with 25 islands and numerous smaller skerries. Hiking and birdwatching are possible there; in summer, you can also swim from the sandy beach. On the island of Renskär, located close to Kalix, a 3.3-kilometre trail leads to various cultural remains. Information boards explain, among other things, the labyrinths found there.

The archipelago can also be experienced from a fishing perspective. In shallow bays, you can fish for pike, perch, vendace, grayling and trout both from a boat and from land. No fishing licence is required for sport fishing in the lower sections of the Kalix River—from just north of Vassholmen to the river mouth.

Swimming, Activities for Children and Kalix Löjrom

Strandängsbadet is a modern outdoor swimming pool on the riverbank next to the centre of Kalix. It has two heated pools, including a shallower pool for younger children. Another attraction for children is Kalix lilla trästad: the miniature town showcases cultural-historical Kalix buildings and is connected to a play area in a traffic-themed environment for children of all ages.

The regional cuisine is also part of getting to know Kalix. Kalix Löjrom received the EU protected designation of origin (PDO) in 2010. The product must be produced, processed and prepared in a designated geographical area according to a method characteristic of that area. Trying Kalix Löjrom is one of the recommended local culinary activities.

Getting There and Further Destinations

Kalix is accessible via the E4. Regular buses connect the town with, among others, Luleå, Haparanda, Boden, Gällivare and Umeå. For further orientation, you can also visit Båtskärsnäs, Sangis and Töre.
