Sellin combines Baltic Sea experiences with maritime culture and a landscape that can also be explored on foot. The pier with its diving gondola, the resort architecture and Selliner See represent different sides of this Baltic Sea resort. When choosing your destination, consider whether you would like to focus mainly on the coast, insights into maritime history or a tour through nature.
Wilhelmstraße, the cliff and the pier
With its magnificent houses dating from the early days of resort architecture, Wilhelmstraße leads to the 30-metre-high cliff. It thus combines historic architecture with the route down to the coast. You can reach Sellin Pier or the promenade at Südstrand via the steep “Himmelsleiter” staircase or by lift. These two options differ in how you descend: choose the stairs for a steep route; the lift offers another way down. Both lead to the coastal destinations mentioned above.
At the pier, the diving gondola offers insights into the Baltic Sea habitat and its animal and plant life. What you can observe depends on visibility and the time of year. The experience is rounded out by a 3D underwater film about the Baltic Sea. This allows you to discover the underwater world in two different ways: through the observations possible from the gondola and by watching the film. Sellin is therefore not just a destination for a stay on the coast, but also offers a maritime view beneath the water’s surface.
Seefahrerhaus and Amber Museum
Since 2010, the Seefahrerhaus museum has been housed in a thatched-roof half-timbered house on Selliner See. It offers a vivid impression of how fishermen and seafarers worked and lived in times gone by. Numerous exhibits of maritime folk culture and nautical instruments are displayed across 120 square metres. The focus is therefore on the daily lives and working conditions of earlier generations, as well as on objects associated with seafaring and navigation.
The Sellin Amber Museum explores another facet of the island’s history. It is located in the centre of Sellin and is considered the only amber museum on the island of Rügen. If you are interested in amber, you can include a visit as a cultural highlight in your trip; the Seefahrerhaus, by contrast, focuses on fishermen, seafarers and maritime folk culture. Together, the two museums cover different subjects, without requiring a joint programme.
Selliner See and nature
A hike around Selliner See runs southwest of the seaside resort of Sellin through the Neuensiener and Selliner See nature reserve. There you can observe a rich variety of flora and fauna. The route around the lake is about 10 kilometres long and can start at the Bollwerk in Sellin. Take the approximate distance into account when planning your day; it describes the route but does not, by itself, indicate how long the walk will take. If you are considering a longer outing through the landscape in addition to coastal activities, this is a specific way to explore Selliner See and the nature reserve.
