Ralswiek lies at a lagoon of the Baltic Sea at the southernmost point of the Großer Jasmunder Bodden. The town is located on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and within the Vorpommern-Rügen district.

Geographical Location

Ralswiek is situated somewhat away from Federal Highway 96 and the Stralsund–Sassnitz railway line. Ralswiek lies at the southernmost point of the Großer Jasmunder Bodden, a lagoon of the Baltic Sea.

History and Culture

Archaeological findings indicate settlement around Ralswiek in the Late Mesolithic period, approximately 8,000 years ago. Remains of a fortification presumed to date from the Bronze Age have also been preserved on the nearby Schlossberg.

In the 8th century, the West Slavic Ranen founded Ralswiek as a seaport. In the Middle Ages, the town was an important Baltic Sea port.
