Sukow combines village history and craftsmanship with experiences involving horses and the Lewitz. The municipality lies on the edge of the Lewitz landscape and nature reserve. This gives you a range of ways to plan your trip: you can learn about the history of the village church, experience porcelain craftsmanship or explore activities in the municipality.

Village Church with History and Works of Art

Sukow’s present-day neo-Gothic village church was designed by Schwerin architect Theodor Krüger and inaugurated in 1883, after three years of construction. It is the third place of worship to stand on this site. Its furnishings also reflect different periods: the church received an organ in 1908, and three bells now hang in the tower.

Two of the bells are bronze bells that were recast after the Second World War and consecrated at a festive service in 1969. The smallest bell dates from 1614. Its eventful history is recounted in a poem by Heinrich Jaeger, written for the bell consecration in 1930. A three-part altarpiece from a predecessor chapel was also rediscovered during work on the church. It depicts the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and the Entombment of Jesus. An inscription on the back records that David Hille, court painter from Schwerin, painted the work in 1700.

Nature and Rural Impressions

The Uhlenpark by the church adds manicured green spaces, park benches and a wooden pavilion to your visit. The grounds invite you to linger. The connection to the Lewitz is also reflected in activities in the municipality: in the village of Zietlitz, the Norddeutscher Kinderbauernhof gives visitors a glimpse of rural life. Its large, rustic round barn is an event venue. The farm was founded in 2007 as a project for the Lewitz off-site location of the 2009 Federal Horticultural Show in Schwerin.

Those interested in paths and landscapes can also find the Bodderwech in Zietlitz. The old route leads from Zietlitz Forest to Raben Steinfeld Forest, in the direction of Schwerin. From Zietlitz, cycle paths offer routes towards Pinnow and Schwerin, and into the Lewitz landscape conservation area. Porcelain Painting and Equestrian Sports

In Sukow, you can also learn about the work of a porcelain manufactory. Porcelain painter and designer Kerstin Behrens welcomes visitors to watch her at work in her workshop. On courses at the porcelain manufactory, participants create their own small works of art from porcelain, discover their artistic abilities and learn about the practical work involved in a porcelain manufactory. The First Mecklenburg Porcelain Manufactory also produces hand-painted one-of-a-kind pieces to order.

Equestrian sports are another special feature: Sukow has developed into a stronghold of equestrian sports over many years and has hosted annual state championships in dressage and show jumping, as well as other equestrian events. Horse lovers can swap their bicycle saddle for a riding saddle for a few hours or take a carriage ride through the Lewitz area. Sukow thus offers a choice of both craft and cultural experiences and activities involving horses.
