Parchim is the district town of the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is located around 40 kilometres southeast of Schwerin. The Elde flows through the town; it divides into several branches and forms islands. The 60-hectare Wockersee lake is located northeast of Parchim and serves as a local recreation area. Its surroundings include woodland, meadows and wet meadows.
