Local history at the museum and on a guided tour

The town museum’s exhibition rooms are located in the Amtsturm and the historic Amtshaus. The museum features a collection of local folklore covering the history of Eldenburg and Lübz’s development into a town.

A guided tour of Lübz town centre starts at the Amtsturm. The tower is therefore not only one of the museum’s locations, but also the starting point for this tour. If you are interested in a guided perspective on the town centre, you can include this tour as a separate activity. The museum and the tour offer different points of focus: the museum highlights its collection of local folklore and historical themes, while the tour of the town starts at the Amtsturm.

Planetarium and observatory

Lübz has had a planetarium since 1980; an observatory was added in 1999. In the planetarium, a Carl Zeiss Jena ZKPI projector projects around 5,000 stars onto a dome with a diameter of eight metres. The approximate number of stars and the size of the dome give a concrete picture of the planetarium’s technical equipment. Astronomy enthusiasts will therefore find a different focus here than at the town museum: one presents a projection of the night sky, while the other explores the history of Eldenburg and the town’s development. The observatory is an additional part of Lübz’s astronomy history, added in 1999.

The Old Water Tower

The observation tower known as the “Old Water Tower” was built in 1913 and is 37 metres high. Its year of construction and height offer a brief introduction to the building, without conflating it with the museum’s collections or the planetarium’s themes. As you choose what interests you, you can distinguish between three different aspects of Lübz: local history, astronomy and an observation tower, each of which has its own appeal. The Amtsturm is also the starting point for the guided tour described above; the Old Water Tower is identified as an observation tower.

Visitor information

The Lübz Tourist Information Office provides information on train and bus connections. It also sells cycling, hiking and fishing maps, as well as souvenirs, and arranges town tours and planetarium tours.
