The manor complex in Karnin is a key focal point in the town’s history. The former outlying estate of Friedrichshof Manor House was built around 1910 and is part of a characteristic Western Pomeranian manor estate. Arranged in an unaltered layout directly along the road from Karnin to Velgast, it consists of the manor house, workers’ houses, barns and the steward’s house. In the past, Karnin developed into a popular destination for day trips, especially for city dwellers.
Park and local museums
A castle pond was also created alongside the castle in Karnin. The park in Karnin is still well worth a stroll. If you enjoy spending time outdoors as well as exploring architectural history, you can make a walk through the park a focus of your visit. The castle pond adds a landscape perspective to the view of the manor complex.
Small museums and traditional crafts are also part of the local scene. Karnin has a small kitchen museum. Vorpommern-RĂĽgen as a wider cultural setting
The number of museums in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen is estimated at around 60. Regional landmarks also include the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain and the islands of Rügen, Hiddensee and Ummanz, which are part of the district. The old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”. On Rügen, the beech forests in Jasmund National Park are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe”. The two examples offer different perspectives: urban history and nature.
Art lovers can find further, independent destinations at the Gallery in the Monastery in Ribnitz-Damgarten and the Gallery in the Orangery in Putbus. The Gallery in the Monastery primarily shows contemporary regional art, as well as a permanent exhibition of prints by Lyonel Feininger. The art collection of the district of Vorpommern-RĂĽgen is preserved, cared for and administered there. It comprises around 500 works of painting, graphic art, sculpture, ceramics, silk painting and textile design, dating from the late 19th century to the present day. In Putbus, the Gallery in the Orangery presents up to eight exhibitions each year in a historic building in the heart of the city of arts and culture. Readings and concerts are also held there. Vorpommern-Rügen is also known, among other things, for the Störtebeker Festival; check specific event dates in advance.
