Nature Trail and Bathing Spots

The main route of the Fuhlendorf Nature Trail is a circular walk of about 2.2 kilometres through Fuhlendorf Forest. The trail also has two extensions: “Rätseltiere” (Riddle Animals), about 860 metres long, and “Waldauge” (Forest Eye), about 800 metres long. The route includes seven stations. Each has a hidden gemstone and a letter board, which are part of a riddle story.

One station introduces the wolf, red fox, wild boar, red deer, roe deer and Eurasian jay. There, you can discover animal tracks and imitate the animals. In this way, the trail combines the riddle story with activities focused on the animals listed. If you want to take route length into account when planning your day, note that the main route and the two extensions have separate distance figures.

Fuhlendorf has natural bathing spots with sunbathing lawns on Hafenstraße and Seegang. Swimming and a forest walk are therefore different options for your stay. The location details identify two specific places to spend time by the water, without requiring you to rely on a general term such as “beach.”

Maritime History and Culture

A public path through a small boggy Bodden coastal forest leads to the Bodden and offers a close-up view of the JOHANNA shipwreck. The steel two-masted sailing barge, also known as a sailing barge, was built in 1899 by D. W. Kremer in Elmshorn and has a wooden bottom. It is 19.04 metres long and 4.77 metres wide, with a registered tonnage of 38.00 GRT.

Boatbuilding in earlier times is also part of the area’s history. The Dornquast boatyard was based on Hafenstraße in Fuhlendorf from 1885 until the early 1950s. Between 1871 and 1914, 40 sailing boats were built in Fuhlendorf and 12 in Michaelsdorf. These figures record two aspects of maritime history: the long-established boatyard and the number of sailing boats built in the two places.

Another cultural destination is K-Drei e.V. Fuhlendorf. The nonprofit cultural association was founded in 2018 on the southern Bodden coast in the municipality of Fuhlendorf, bringing together the fields of cinema, art and communication. Its members include cultural professionals and people interested in culture from Fuhlendorf, Bodstedt, the surrounding region and Berlin. The association’s focus offers a different way to engage with culture than the area’s maritime history.

Local Information and Community Services

The Southern Bodden Coast Tourist Information Centre in Fuhlendorf sells tickets for local tours, guided excursions and community events. It also issues tourist fishing licences and fishing permits for inland and coastal waters. There is an information point with local maps at Dorfstraße/Alten Dorfstraße.

At the municipal level, an extensive network of cycle paths connects neighbouring communities and links up with the Baltic Sea Cycle Route. Bodstedt Harbour has a harbour basin belonging to the municipality of Fuhlendorf, with jetties, visitor berths and a slipway. The Bodstedter Zeesenboot regatta is part of the associated municipality’s event tradition: it traditionally takes place on the first weekend in September and is the oldest event of its kind.
