Forests, moorlands and lakes in the municipality

The tourist appeal of the municipality of Nossentiner Hütte is shaped, among other things, by its proximity to Drewitzer See. Its proximity to Dreier See and Fleesensee is also among the factors mentioned. The “Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide” EU Special Protection Area for Birds (DE 2339-401) borders the planning area immediately to the west and surrounds the village of Nossentiner Hütte. The municipality thus brings together a variety of landscapes and a distinctive connection to a protected area.

For active days out, Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park offers a network of cycling, hiking and riding trails. This network provides different ways to explore the landscape on foot, by bike or on horseback. The nature walks offered by Manufaktur Löwenzahn, by contrast, have their own thematic focus: plants and ancient myths take centre stage.

Local history and special places

The name Nossentiner Hütte itself refers to the village’s history: it recalls glassworks craftsmen and tar kilns from the mid-18th century. In Sparow, the Gutshofkapelle St. Hubertus is part of the rebuilt estate complex. The chapel is a listed historic building and was built in 1999. This site therefore brings together the history of the estate complex and the chapel’s comparatively recent construction.

Another historic landmark in the municipality is in Drewitz. The village is known for the former hunting lodge of Erich Honecker, the then head of state of the GDR, located on the lakeshore. A hotel now stands on the site of the former hunting lodge, amid a woodland park. The “Großsteingrab” archaeological monument is also near Drewitzer See. These sites offer different ways to explore the municipality’s history, from a historic architectural complex to an archaeological monument.

Nature walks and wider explorations

Manufaktur Löwenzahn in Nossentiner Hütte offers walks in nature focusing on plants and ancient myths. Individual nature-themed events are available by prior arrangement by telephone or email. If you are interested in this kind of experience, be sure to arrange it in advance. The walks combine nature themes with traditional lore, setting them apart from hikes that focus mainly on distance and scenery.

More nature destinations in the Mecklenburg Lake District

Müritz National Park is part of the Mecklenburg Lake District and is characterised by forests, moorlands, lakes and extensive meadows. Certified nature and landscape guides offer tours through the national park, including guided visits to the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest at Serrahn and tours from the water.

Also in the Mecklenburg Lake District, the Damerower Werder Bison Reserve lies on a peninsula in Kölpinsee and in Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park. Visitors can observe bison there. The reserve also has a forest adventure trail with climbing opportunities, an anthill house, an exhibition featuring tactile and visual panels, and a dendrophone. The regional experience thus ranges from the landscapes and trails of Müritz National Park to the nature and visitor activities at the bison reserve.
