Castle and Village Church

Groß Plasten Castle was built in the second half of the 19th century. An extension was added in the early 20th century. Its construction history thus spans two distinct periods. Those interested in architecture will also find a topic of its own in the village church: it was built in 1901 as a plastered, octagonal central-plan building in the Neo-Baroque style, on a natural-stone plinth. It was designed by the architect Franz Schwechten.

The church has been listed since the 1980s. Its furnishings include a complete set of sandstone fittings dating from the time of its construction. The organ also has a specific connection to the church’s construction: W. Sauer built it in 1901 for the west gallery; it was restored in 1997. These details offer different ways to explore the building’s history—from its exterior structure and furnishings to the instrument. Visitors interested in architecture can thus focus on specific features without reducing the church to its exterior form alone.

The wider municipal area also has a range of cultural and landscape-history destinations. Varchentin Castle was built in 1847 in the Tudor style, following plans by the Swiss architect Auguste de Meuron. In 1838, Peter Joseph Lenné drew up plans for the design of the park in Varchentin. The park is characterized by groups of trees, notable individual trees and meadows. The Kleine and Große Varchentiner lakes are surrounded by a belt of reeds; it takes about an hour to walk around the Kleine Varchentiner See. The church in Varchentin dates from the second half of the 13th century, around 1270 to 1280.

Other historic destinations in the municipality include the old, thatched mill in Beckenkrug and the so-called Rundling in Klein Plasten. The mill was built between about 1851 and 1875 and is the only mill in the Müritz region to have survived in its original location. The Rundling was established in 1934 with 13 farms. These places differ in their history and character: on one side are the mill and farms; on the other, the castle, park and church.

For anglers, Klein Plasten Lake is another way to tailor a trip to their interests. The body of water is listed in the waters directory of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Anglers’ Association. Only boats belonging to the association are permitted on the lake; a boat is available for visiting anglers. When planning a fishing trip, this restriction is as relevant as the provision for guests.
