Between Lakes and Agricultural History
Alt Schwerin lies right between the lakes; to the south and southwest, the village is bordered by Lake Plauer See. Those interested in the history of rural life will find a special focus at the AGRONEUM Alt Schwerin. This open-air and village museum is dedicated to Mecklenburg’s agricultural history from 1848 to the present day. Its extensive open-air grounds house a large collection of agricultural machinery. In Alt Schwerin, the landscape and the development of rural life thus offer distinct aspects of a visit.
AGRONEUM: Machinery, Homes, and Demonstrations
The museum area includes a village section with buildings illustrating different living conditions among the rural population. These include a day labourer’s cottage dating from 1800, farm workers’ homes from 1910 and 1942, as well as from the 1960s, a harvest workers’ barracks, and a new farmer’s house built around 1950. The different dates and building types give the subject a concrete form: alongside agricultural machinery, living and housing conditions are also a central focus.
The exhibition programme includes demonstrations and hands-on activities, as well as blacksmithing and holiday workshops. Visitors who would rather learn about rural life and agriculture in the past as part of a guided tour can choose this as a separate visit option. Guided tours must be booked in advance.
Routes and Places to Visit in the Municipality
Many cycling and hiking trails pass by Alt Schwerin. There are specific directions to the rock garden on Ortkrug: from Alt Schwerin, head towards the AGRONEUM, cross the A19 bridge, and follow Fischweg. After the paved section ends, continue along the gravel path for about 1 km. This approximate distance refers to this final stretch of the route. At the rock garden, different rocks offer insights into their origins and formation. The front section illustrates the rock cycle and the three main rock groups. The rear section presents 21 glacial erratics of different origins and explains what indicator erratics are and how they reached Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Other destinations in the municipality offer their own distinctive attractions. On the island of Werder, which belongs to Alt Schwerin, visitors can explore the lake district on an excursion boat. The Moorochse observation tower is a tourist attraction on the northern shore of Lake Plauer See in the Nossentiner-Schwinzer Heide Nature Park. These options suit different interests: a boat trip on the lake district, a viewpoint on the lakeshore, or the themed trail through the rock garden can each be considered as a separate excursion idea.
Village Church and Getting to the Museum
The village is home to the brick-built Alt Schwerin village church. It probably dates from the 14th century and was given a half-timbered tower in 1732. The historic church adds another building with a long history to the impressions of the AGRONEUM’s village section; the date of its construction remains an estimate.
The AGRONEUM Alt Schwerin can be reached on bus route 77, which runs daily between the island town of Malchow and Parchim. The bus stop is right beside the harvest workers’ barracks; from there, it is a 200 m walk to the main entrance. Visitors wishing to use public transport to get to the museum can include this specific connection in their travel plans.
