Alt Schwerin is located amid a landscape of lakes and a nature park: The town is situated in the Mecklenburg Lake District and in the Nossentiner-Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. At the same time, Alt Schwerin lies on Lake Tauchow, between Lake Drewitz, also known as Lake Alt Schwerin, and Lake Plau.

Nature and Lakes

In the immediate vicinity of Alt Schwerin are Grubenberg and the Affenwald Malchow summer toboggan run. Lockwerder and Steinwerder are located in the surrounding area of the town.

Culture and History

The AGRONEUM Alt Schwerin is an open-air museum that presents Mecklenburg's estate and agricultural history in historically developed grounds. Two large fieldstone cottages were built on Alt Schwerin's village street in the 19th century. The town's history also includes a glassworks that closed in 1901 as the last glassworks in Mecklenburg.

In the wider regional area are Schwenzin Castle, Meyenburg Castle, Burg Schlitz and Ringwall.

Alt Schwerin has a railway station on the Parchim–Malchow railway line. The same local area also includes Silz, Penkow, Zislow, Fünfseen, Göhren-Lebbin and Nossentiner Hütte.
