If you prioritize nature, water, or historic townscapes when planning a trip, you can explore a variety of themes in the wider Sternberg destination. For Mildenitz, this regional perspective provides guidance: nature experiences center on nature trails, rivers, and lakes, while Sternberg has its own focus on architectural and urban history.

Nature and Nature Trails

Sternberg lies in Sternberg Lake District Nature Park. The landscape around Sternberg includes gentle hills, almost 100 lakes, and the Warnow and Mildenitz rivers. The Mildenitz is also part of a distinctive natural landscape: the approximately 3 km trail through the Warnow and Mildenitz Breakthrough Valley Nature Reserve near Groß Görnow leads through one of the largest breakthrough valleys in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Information boards explain the area’s geology and birdlife. As route details may change, check the latest route information before setting out.

Another nature trail in the wider Sternberg destination runs around the edge of town by Lake Luckow and is approximately 4.5 kilometers long. Its information boards have their own story: in 2006, students in grade 12 at David Frank Gymnasium in Sternberg researched and designed them as part of a student project. The two routes have different focuses: the shorter path leads through the breakthrough valley, while the longer one circles the lake. Their length and landscape provide practical guidance for planning your day.

Water Routes and Regional Experiences

A canoe route runs along the Mildenitz, the Warnow, and the Lower Warnow through the Warnow and Mildenitz Breakthrough Valley Nature Reserve. Kanucamp Sternberger Burg is also a starting point for a canoe route. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing day on Lake Sternberg in rowboats and pedal boats; availability may vary. The lake is also one of the designated bathing spots. Check bathing conditions and facilities according to the season.

Numerous restaurants in the Sternberg area serve fish from the region’s lakes, game, and other local specialties. The waterside landscape is thus linked not only to nature trails and canoeing, but also to regional cuisine.

Town History in Sternberg

The Sternberg Local History Museum is located in the oldest house in town. A total of 14 exhibition rooms present, among other things, Sternberg’s prehistory and early history. Following extensive renovation, the museum reopened on April 6, 2024; the exhibition showcases important periods in the town’s history and the way earlier generations lived. Visitors can also see calcareous sandstone containing fossil inclusions. Group visits and guided tours can be arranged by appointment in advance.

The Church of St. Mary and St. Nicholas also offers insight into Sternberg’s history. It is a three-aisled, five-bay brick hall church with a massive tower. A fresco by Fritz Greve depicts the last state parliament held in the open countryside at Sagsdorf Bridge on June 20, 1549. It was there that the Mecklenburg estates adopted the Reformation. The 66-meter-high tower can be climbed: 189 steps lead to a platform beneath the Neo-Gothic spire, offering visitors views across Sternberg and the surrounding lakes and forests. Access may be seasonal; check before planning a climb.

Sternberg’s historic town center includes the surviving Mühlentor gate and the ramparts. In the Middle Ages, the town wall enclosed the old town; of the four original town gates, only the Mühlentor and its entrance and exit remain today. From 1310 to 1329, the site of the Local History Museum was occupied by the former castle of the Mecklenburg prince Henry II, known as the Lion; from 1500 until the Reformation in 1549, it was occupied by an Augustinian monastery.
