Gnevkow’s village church stands on a small hill and is a plastered fieldstone building dating from the 15th century. Parts of what was presumably a late Gothic predecessor were reused in its construction. Village Church and Historic Monuments in Gnevkow
The church’s furnishings also reflect different periods. The altar wall preserves carvings from the 16th century. The pulpit altar combines parts of a late Gothic altarpiece with a pulpit made around 1600. Both were together in the neighboring church in Hohenmocker until 1757. The carved altarpiece includes two kneeling donor figures and a central depiction of Mary. The altarpiece and pulpit thus bring together different dates and a shared former location—an interesting detail for anyone interested in architectural and art history.
The church complex, which is a protected historic monument, also includes a bell dating from 1827 in a freestanding bell frame, the cemetery, a dry-laid fieldstone wall and a grave stele with a floral motif. The complex extends beyond the church building itself to include its surrounding features.
Other historic buildings in the village represent different building types. A fieldstone barn stands at Dorfstraße 20/21. A farmstead at Dorfstraße 29 comprises a residential building, two farm buildings, and an enclosure with gates and pillars. Other features include a former estate stable for horses on Dorfstraße and the village’s paved roadway. The village’s history can therefore be explored through more than just the church: farm buildings, a barn, a stable and the road surface are also among the designated historic monuments.
The chapel’s history has a clear turning point: it was formerly closed by the building authorities, and its stabilization and restoration were completed in summer 2003.
