The municipality of Groß Nemerow borders Lake Tollensesee directly. Village History in Groß Nemerow
The church in Groß Nemerow was probably built by the Order of St. John at the beginning of the 14th century. The Gothic fieldstone ashlar building has a large half-timbered tower dating from 1750. The church also contains an ornate baptismal font from the 13th century. These features bring together different historical periods: the font is dated earlier than the church’s probable construction, while the tower comes from a much later century.
Two other buildings also tell the story of the village: a local history museum is housed in a former fire-engine house built around 1800, and the old school houses a school museum. These two places complement the history of the church building with topics relating to local history and everyday school life.
Cultural Venues in Klein Nemerow and Zachow
In Klein Nemerow lies Höhentipsberg, a significant Bronze Age burial mound. It is dated to between 1800 and 800 BC and is considered an archaeological monument. The history of the former St. John’s site is also reflected in the ruins of a fieldstone barn from the 14th century, which belonged to the former commandery of the Order of St. John, and a gravestone of the last commander dating from 1620.
Zachow is home to a half-timbered church from the 17th century with late Gothic carved altar shrines. The annual Zachow Summer of Culture features changing exhibitions, readings and concerts in the village church. If you would like to plan your visit around one of these events, check the event dates in advance. The reconstructed village smithy is also a cultural venue, offering space for celebrations, book readings, literary evenings, skat tournaments and lectures.
Zachow also has connections to equestrian sport. There is an Icelandic horse breeding farm there, and an international Icelandic horse pace championship is held annually. The Tollense Groß Nemerow e. V. riding club holds annual competitions at the riding and tournament grounds in Zachow Forest.
Cycling, Nature Trail and Lake Tollensesee
The 23-kilometre Cycle Route 2 runs from Burg Stargard via the cultural park on Lake Tollensesee to Klein Nemerow, and returns via Groß Nemerow and Rowa. This allows you to include a longer cycling route with several named stops in your travel plans.
For a shorter walk, you could instead take the approximately four-kilometre nature trail between Nonnenhof and Klein Nemerow. It leads from Klein Nemerow to Nonnenhof in the Nonnenbachtal Nature Reserve. From Nonnenhof, the path first follows a stretch along a steep bank through old-growth forest, then continues on a cycling and walking path. In Klein Nemerow, the erratic boulder field contains 20 numbered boulders placed at 17 locations.
Cycling paths run through the municipality along the Lake Tollensesee Circular Route, and there are also various places to swim. Klein Nemerow has a landing stage for passenger and scheduled boat services on Lake Tollensesee. If you plan to take a trip, check the timetable in advance.
