Village Churches with Stories of Their Own
The village church in Schwinkendorf is a listed church building. It was built in the mid-13th century; its rectangular west tower was added in 1495 as a brick structure. The cemetery is also part of the historic ensemble: it is enclosed by a dry-stone fieldstone wall. The construction period, later addition and cemetery enclosure each tell a different part of the building’s history.
Rambow showcases a different architectural style. Its village church is a Renaissance fieldstone building from the 15th century. A 1933 organ, built by the Danish organ maker Marcussen of Apenrade, is located on the west gallery. The altar and pulpit date from 1610. Visitors interested in church architecture, organs or historic furnishings can take a closer look at these features as they explore the area.
The Wüste Kirche Domherrenhagen is the last surviving structure of a village that existed there from the 13th to the 15th century. In 1271, the church became the parish church for the inhabitants of Rambow. Services and concerts are occasionally held in the ruins. This site thus brings together the area’s long history and its occasional use today.
Manor-House History and Unusual Collections
The manor house in Moltzow has a landscaped park laid out by Wilhelm von Maltzan. Marxhagen, a district of the municipality of Moltzow, is also home to a castle dating from the mid-19th century. Built in the Tudor style, it continues the tradition of English Tudor Gothic architecture in Mecklenburg. The park and castle offer different ways to explore the history of estates and architecture.
An unusual museum destination is located in the Pfundgrube Gutshaus Rambow Hof: it houses the First German Metre Museum and a collection of butter wrapping paper. These distinctive collection themes add a cultural point of interest alongside the churches and manor-house history.
Animals and Gardens in Rambow
The Rambow Farm Animal Park is home to around 200 animals representing 70 species and focuses on old domestic animal breeds that are endangered. There is a trampoline, climbing equipment and swings for children. Parking is available in front of the farm animal park. This makes it possible to plan a visit around the animals and available play facilities, without conflating it with the area’s historic highlights.
The farm animal park also includes a botanical garden with 700 different perennials and woody plants. The farm is located at Rambow Hof in the Mecklenburg Lake District, on a terminal moraine. Visitors wishing to include plants and scenery in their stay as well as animals will find further specific themes to explore.
