Kuckssee combines a landscape shaped by water, moorland and forest with cultural attractions in its districts. The lake that gives the municipality of Kuckssee its name covers approximately 7 hectares and lies amid the municipality’s districts. During your stay, you can explore nature and local history as separate points of interest: the nature reserve defines the landscape, while the manor house, church and manor-house ensemble offer distinct destinations for culture enthusiasts.

Lake, Moorland and Protected Landscape

Kuckssee is surrounded by alder carr and moorland. Together with Lapitzer See, it forms a 110-hectare nature reserve. The reserve’s conservation objectives include shallow lakes with broad belts of reed and other aquatic vegetation, spring-fed alder carr and treeless moorland. These varied landscape features give the area its character: open water lies alongside vegetated shorelines, woodland and moorland. Nature enthusiasts will find not just a lake here, but a protected area whose designated habitats range from water to moorland.

Wildlife is also part of this natural setting. Moor frogs, otters, white-tailed eagles and ospreys are found in the nature reserve; cranes also nest there. Kuckssee is also an important roosting site for northern bean geese and greater white-fronted geese. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider wildlife watching as a distinct interest alongside hiking and culture.

Trails and Orientation

One important point for orientation: there are no public paths in the Kuckssee and Lapitzer See Nature Reserve. So don’t plan a walk along public paths within the protected area. The municipal forest in Krukow, which is suitable for hiking, is a separate option. If you’re mainly looking to go hiking, you can consider this forest as a nature destination in its own right, rather than planning to use the nature reserve as a trail network.

Kucksberg lies directly to the west of the destination. From the 73-metre-high Kucksberg, you can enjoy a lovely view over the Kuckssee and Lapitzer See Nature Reserve. The lake and nature reserve take centre stage in the view; Kucksberg is a separate landmark in the landscape.

Cultural Attractions in Krukow and Puchow

Cultural attractions in Kuckssee include the manor house, also known as Krukow Castle, and the fieldstone church in Krukow. Each offers culture enthusiasts a different point of interest: the manor house is identified as a manor house or castle, while the church is notable for its fieldstone construction. The ensemble around Puchow Manor is also worth seeing. It includes two gatehouses at the entrance and a manor park. Those interested in historic buildings and ensembles can include all three places in their choice of cultural destinations without conflating them with the nature experience at the lake.

Krukow is a useful reference point for getting around: the village is right on the B 192 and is well connected by road. Nature, culture and location can thus be weighed as separate criteria when choosing where to stay in Kuckssee. If you’d like to explore other destinations at the same level, you’ll also find Ankershagen, Möllenhagen and Penzlin.
