Walow Castle

Walow Castle was built in 1872 on behalf of the von Flotow family. Its richly decorated neo-Gothic design features elaborate brick ornaments. The castle is privately owned and is being restored in stages. Its construction period, style and ongoing restoration add distinct historical and architectural aspects to the story of the castle.

Churches and their history

The medieval church in Lexow burned down during the Thirty Years’ War and was rebuilt in 1637. The building was altered several times over the following centuries. Its furnishings also offer several specific historical points of interest: the church contains a 300-year-old pulpit and a baptismal angel with a baptismal bowl dating from 1726. It is also home to the smallest organ built by the Wittstock organ builder F. H. Lütkemüller in the mid-19th century. The building’s history and furnishings thus point to different eras.

Walow Church has a baptismal font. A small room beneath the bell tower serves as a winter church and can be reached by a few steps. The details highlighted at the two churches are therefore different: in Lexow, the pulpit, baptismal angel and organ are among the main features, while in Walow they are the baptismal font and winter church room.

Church services are also held at different intervals. Services are held regularly once a month at Walow Church, while services take place in Lexow two or three times a year. As dates may change, check the service times before making plans.

The church in Lexow is also used for concerts and exhibitions by Land Art Lexow. If you would like to plan around these cultural events, check the relevant dates in advance.

Manor house and archaeological traces

Lexow Manor House was built in 1874 and, together with its estate, belonged to the Dobbertin Monastery’s landholdings. Following extensive and sensitive restoration, it offers holiday apartments and bed and breakfast. If you are considering staying there, check availability separately.

Nature in the wider destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District

The Müritz National Park is characterised by forests, moors, lakes and expansive meadows. Its hiking trail covers nine stages and showcases the park’s landscape types and special features: it runs along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes and to the source of the Havel. The Damerower Werder bison reserve lies on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin and in the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park. Visitors can watch the animals there. The forest discovery trail features climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition with touch and viewing panels, and a dendrophone.
