If you would like to make historic buildings and paths the focus of your trip, Datzetal offers several specific points of interest. In Pleetz, a Slavic rampart and the history of a former knight’s estate come together; Salow pairs an old fieldstone church with a path through the manor park. Tours to waterside locations and through the forest are also among the options described. This means you can choose what to explore in the municipality according to the themes that interest you most: history, village scenery, or getting around on foot and by bike.
Rampart, Manor House and Churches
The Pleetz rampart dates from the early Slavic period of the 8th or 9th century and is now located in the Pleetz manor park. Also in Pleetz is the present-day manor house, which stands on the site of a former castle: the castle was first mentioned in 1366 and was a knight’s estate in the mid-14th century. The Pleetz estate was also associated with the hereditary office of Land Marshal of the Lordship of Stargard. Until the end of the monarchy, a member of the Hahn family held this office for almost 450 years.
The fieldstone church in Salow, dating from 1308, is the oldest building in the municipality today. The church in Roga was built in the early 14th century. Those interested in manor-house architecture will find buildings with a range of dates: Sadelkow Manor House was built in the first half of the 18th century and remodelled in the early 20th century. The landscaped park and the steward’s house, built in 1890, are all that remain of the Roga estate. Roga Manor House is privately owned.
Paths around Salow
The Poetensteig runs alongside the pond in Salow Manor Park. Its route was reinstated in 1991 and has been resurfaced. If you would like to include a walk in the park in your travel plans, you can use this path as a point of interest in its own right. Another route described here starts at the Salow granary, passes Klosterkoppel and continues to Lake Schwarzer See. It is designed as a walking or cycling tour. The meeting point and starting point is the granary; parking is available there for cars and bicycles.
A walk from Salow into Salower Forest in the direction of Beseritz also passes Lake Zieglersee. The lake is still there and lies in the middle of a field. It can only be reached on foot across the field. This restriction is important when choosing the route: if you want to include Lake Zieglersee, plan to walk there rather than expecting direct access from a vehicle.
The Datze and the villages of the municipality
The course of the Datze also gives a clear overview of the municipality: a total of 9.7 kilometres lie within Datzetal. Of these, 3.3 kilometres are in Sadelkow/Bassow, 3.5 kilometres in Roga, 0.4 kilometres in Pleetz and 2.5 kilometres in Salow.
In Salow, the village centre is housed in the former manor house. It includes the community centre, youth club, restaurant, ceramics workshop and local history room. Alongside its church and paths, Salow therefore also offers a glimpse of various village facilities.
